toomanytoyz
Hey Guys, Yeah, so I'm sure it's been done before, but I couldn't stand my stock grill, and after about 24 hours of ownership, I'd had enough of it! I like the look of the various mesh grills for our cars, but I didn't want to fork the coin. So I took advantage of the rainy day and warm weather, went to Home Depot and got me 3 bucks worth of Gutter Guard, and fired up my dremel. So here's what I'm sure is just one more pictoral for you to shake your head at... From a frikken newbie, no less. lol So, here's how I started: http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump054.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump055.jpg Do I dare? http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump056.jpg Yup: http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump057.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump058.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump059.jpg So that was cut, grind, sand, and admire... Now how to attach the mesh? http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump062.jpg Yeah. Zip ties. If that was the turn for the worse you needed to run away, then go ahead. I'm surprised you made it this far! So I drilled a couple holes for the ties. Did this on the other side, too. http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump063.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump064.jpg And here's all the places I "secured" it. I drilled two more holes, one at 3 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock (if that makes sense) to secure the sides. That makes 6 total holes drilled. And I used the 3 "slits" that were already there in the top center of the grill too. I don't think it's going anywhere... http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump065.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump068.jpg Hmmm... Doesn't look bad, actually... http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump067.jpg Mask and spray with some Rustoleum Semi-Gloss black... http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump070.jpg Voila! http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump071.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump077.jpg Badge it? http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump079.jpg And here's some crappy, rainy, blurry, installed pics... http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump084.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump085.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump088.jpg And here's the mess of a workstation... I'll uh... clean it tomorrow... http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/EarlyMarchPicDump091.jpg I actually kinda dig it. It came out a lot better than I thought. It was going to be an interim grill til I got what I wanted, but I may just keep it. I wasn't sure how bad it was going to look with the 3 voids in the plastic from the way the grill was molded dictating where I had to cut, but it's not nearly as noticeable as I thought it would be. We'll see how it looks in the daylight. Thanks for checking it out. And I hope you'll still let me hang out here! LOL!

BAC5.2
Umm... your license plate is very appropriate... I think it would look a lot better if you filled the holes where the stock "wings" were. And when you put the badge on it. toomanytoyz
Yeah, the plate fit the truck it was on a lot better, but it was cheaper to transfer the registration. I will change the plate in July when its time for renewal. And this was meant to be an "interim" grill til I could decide (and afford) what I wanted for an aftermarket one. I actually think it came out a lot better than I expected it to. I didn't have the time to bondo the "holes" so I just slapped it together quick. But I may leave it... It even looks good in the daylight. At least, until you get right on top of it and really look at it. But it's a good 5-footer mod, and for a daily, that may just be enough for me! Once it stops raining, I will test fit the scoobie badge and see if I like it. I think I will. And I really do dig the chrome. I think it looks sporty enough with the mesh, and the chrome adds a touch of class. But, I've always liked chrome... lol
St.GLegacy
Good job, looks cool....and re-badge it!
Flat4
looks good but you should bondo up those holes Not hard to do at all and its very cheap.
toomanytoyz
Daytime pic! http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/0307111436.jpg Not bad, and I think with the badge back on there, the cutout won't be as noticeable... subie3429
looks good, i would also paint the chrome black. I did the same with my stock grille, just didnt have a dremel to make everything flat. Ill get to it one day lol
rice_rocket
I cut my grill a little closer to the front so those dips were a lot smaller. For me I kept the chrome because I have a black car.. murdered out front is not for me I have to re-sand the plastic sometime this summer.. and re-paint the grille. 2 years later and the rocks from my daily drive have chipped away at it.. busted my emblem too, so I left it blank like your last picture. toomanytoyz
^^^Sucks about having to repaint. I am wondering how long mine will hold up, too. Here's a couple daytime pics with the badge... Riding dirty http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/badged2.jpg And after a run through the drivethru wash. Yes, I hear you hissing and booing at me. Too bad. It's a beater. lol http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/Scoobie/badged1.jpg I like it a lot better with the badge. And I even think I kinda sorta eyeballed it almost maybe centered! Ok, I will stop with the pics now. Think I should paint the fog light surrounds satin black to match?
Mbohn007
Love it with the badge. Im using this thread to do mine when I get home in a month.
rice_rocket
I wouldn't paint the fog bezel's... it looks better body colored. black would be ghetto like you got replacement covers that weren't painted
Madjik_Man
For $3 and minimal skills it looks pretty good. I like the color matched fog light bezels - I would however paint the chrome grilled surround black. It'd look badarse

Garage.East
Like others have said, I would personally paint the chrome trim to either black or color matched to the car. However it is your car and as long as you are content it doesn't matter what others think.
toomanytoyz
Yeah. I think I'm keeping the chrome. I like it.
Mbohn007
Yeah keep it chrome. It looks good with the chrome headlights. Just the right amount.
coSTIgan-GT
Haha I made mine out of the excact same stuff! Good job. I did fill the holes and painted the trim black. Had the chrome for a while, but I think it looks better black. And I did paint my fog bezels and hood scoop. All the pieces are satin black. The color combo fits my car well with black wheels, but mine is bsm.
