Oil Cooler (am i nuts?)

Recommended Posts

the auto trans already has a cooler for it, the hard part for the MT would be circulation, as well as access points. id likely not even think about doing it.

oil cooler is a good idea, especially if youre loading the hell out of your engine regularly. i put one on my old truck that i used for towing, it made a world of difference.

That's good enough news.. I don't have to worry about messing up my transmission anymore :D

The oil cooler, I think, is definitely going in. I plan on road-tripping quite a bit in this car. Any extra life I can add to the engine should come in handy.

I just generally drive the piss out of my car so if I can keep that sweet bronze fluid thick id be in good shape. Any one know of mishimoto or other companies making oil filter relocation kits for the ej22s or any ej for that matter?

I have been waiting to run out of ideas with my car or to become rich. But I always had a oil cooler in mind as well as a top mounted one

under 600 bucks to keep your engine a bit cooler as well as some style points under the hood. What do you guys think?

Your car already has an oil cooler...just not an external radiator type one. The stock oil cooler does its job just fine.

Waste of time and money IMO. If it needed one to begin with, there would be one already on it.

Preventative maintenance. Lower oil levels means longer life and you can abuse it more without the worry of overheating. Piece of mind.

The statement doesn't make much sense to me. There are ALOT of things on cars that should be there or NEED to be there. Factory L brakes for example.

Ok +1 for top mount. I was gonna go more along the route of a scuzzy front mount when I do the ob bumper swap so it looks mean. I just like the utilitarian look.

But I looked under my car last night and I have oil seepage around the oil pan. Gonna do some more scoping tonight.

An oil cooler won't fix that.....but an oil pan gasket will lol

im not aware of any subarus with an oil pan gasket, maybe a 1.8l lol.

Are you kidding me?

Do you think its a bare metal to metal surface? There is always a gasket....RTV or otherwise....doesn't matter. There is always some form of gasket on an oil pan.

And hey! IMAGINE this....

Both Felpro and Victor Reinz make gaskets for the EJ engine.

Felpro : OS30656C

Victor Reinz : OS32153

Most people just use RTV and it works fine. IIRC, they come out of the factory using RTV, but aftermarket gaskets are still available.

It's obviously not metal to metal brok, you made my point of factory using fuji bond sealant. All I meant was a felpro or any other non sealant "gasket" will leak everytime. IE 1.8l reseal hayday way back when. RTV or Fuji bond (three bond) is the ticket IME. And sludge, you should only follow gravel trucks if you're in a pickup in reverse, lol.

I've used the Felpro oil pan gasket before without any issues.

Fujibond is great stuff...don't get me wrong. The point I'm trying to make is that there are oil pan gaskets....they can be used...and they are cheaper than a tube of Fujibond. If the oil pan is PROPERLY torqued, an aftermarket pan gasket does just fine.

Most oil leaks after replacing gaskets are caused by improper torque...usually over torquing.

Yeah, properly torqued is probably the key to those. Now that I think about it, the ones I've seen leak are from do it yourselfers who just wind up doing it to themselves, haha. And that fuji bond is expensive you're right! At least it lasts for quite awhile haha
