97 legacy 2.5L GT questions

Recommended Posts

generally speaking.

you can use parts from 95 - 99 on your car.

but there are some restrictions on some items,

so if you get ot thinking about a swap,

ask a specific question.

there isn't much you can do with the 97 ej25 DOHC engine.

it was designed to be bigger and better than the ej22,

but it has weaknesses (head gaskets) and limitations .

if you spend a fortune you can put a turbo on it,

but you will not get much boost before you blow it,

and the money would be better spent buying a WRX.

the GT is the middle ground of the subaru line.

it has a 165 hp engine, and a low final drive ratio.

this makes it quicker off the line than most,

but nothing compared to the turbo WRX.

and except for the head gaskets,

it is a fairly reliable car.

a fairly reliable AWD car.

if you want fast, or powerful,

buy a FWD car.

and unless you have a turbo,

you cannot chirp the tires on an All Wheel Drive car on drive pavement.

but on my 95 ej22 (135 hp) lego sedan with the rear wheels disconnected,

i could squeal the front tires every time coming off the line.

the ej25 would be even better.

auto or manual trans?????????

Look into Borla or replica UEL headers. The fit of the replicas can be hit or miss. For a cat back I don't think there are many direct fit options left. You would probably have to get something for another Subaru and make it fit. One of my friend made a cat back from a 95-01 Impreza fit his 99 Legacy. Another friend made a cat back from a first gen Forester fit his 98 Legacy. I personally had an 05 wrx axle back welded to the stock mid pipe on my 98 wagon.

Yes you can chirp the tires on drive pavement especially if it's a manual trans. I can get a little wheel spin from the fronts from a dead stop and more so when turning. Mine is an auto though but the performance summer tires are a harder compound so this probably contributes.
