Rear end HOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLLL

Recommended Posts

I believe my rear differential is telling me it's time for some attention.

I have replaced both rear wheel hubs/bearings within the last 2 months.

I drained the fluid *SO NASTY* and replaced it. I don't think it has ever been changed. There was a bit of metal sludge build up on the drain plug.

It hooowwwwllllllll's when decelerating. Never when accelerating and pretty quiet when cruising.

I think I'm going to start shopping for a used carrier unless anyone on here has had a GOOD experience with rebuilding this carrier.

Also, exactly what model is it? I believe mine is going to be a 3.27 ratio from what I have researched but have not found a definitive answer to exactly what model this is.

Thanks for any good advise. :)

Mileage? And by "decelerating" do you mean while gradually slowing down while coasting, or when you are applying the brakes?

When gradually decelerating. Almost "floating" if that makes sense.

If I take my foot off the throttle it stops. If I accelerate it stops.

I guess now that I think about it, it does it when coasting at almost no load.

Auto 05-06 LGT is 3.27 from what I have read. OBXT is a different ratio.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is what I found online:

It might be something wrong with the way one (or both) of the wheel hubs were installed then. That sounds like exactly what my car felt/sounded like when my rear hubs/bearings started going bad - the sound and vibration went away under acceleration and when breaking, but was very noticeable when coasting.

I replaced both rear hubs not long ago. I don't see a whole lot that can go wrong with installing them as they're a sealed unit.

Removing them, now that's another story. Really easy to ruin them removing them.
