Lastly, just to be clear, if I'm using a portable MP3 player that doesn't use the cars 12V DC power (AKA: cigarette lighter juice), do I need the GLI?

TIA,

mc

If you're not powering the MP3 player in any way by the car, a GLI is completely unnecessary. I also haven't noticed any problems with heat...there's a lot of open space behind the CD player that might be helping to keep temperatures down whereas most vehicle's stereos are packed into the dash very tightly.

I'll let others offer up wishes & wish-nots, but essentially, I'd do the install with an eye on the future. If you think you might add XM at some point, or an MP3 charger, just set it up as best you can for future flexibility.

Awesome! Expect a new customer shortly. Grateful for the reply....

Pins 5 & 7 have me baffled at the moment. 5 is unstable at 3.15V, and occasionally "spikes" down to zero somewhat randomly. I was sure 7 was a clock signal until the track changed...then I was confused again. From what I can find on Panasonic/Mitsushita, they use a serial communications protocol, which will help. I ordered a USB to Serial adapter for my laptop so I can program & debug my PLC...when dell replaced my lappy, they gave me one without a serial port. In the mean time, I'll keep poking around the internet for info.

Any EE's have any idea what 5 & 7 could be?

It's possible that this serial protocol could be one of the few major ones in use for external CD changers, however it's just used internally. If it is and you find out which one, you can possibly get 3rd party changer interface and just splice it in..

Jazzy, Just finished the install. WOW, THAT WAS EASY. I took my time and did everything slowly and verified everything before i moved on. Wow that is s clean install. I did one thing to dress it up though. I took the cables, RCA splitter, and the GLI and wraped them up so that they will not come loose and rattle. I ziped tied it all together and then wraped it in electical tape. It looks so nice.

Thank you so much for providing such a great product.

Now my XM sounds great and no more static interferance or radio station blead.

Looks like the ground loop interrupt is for RCA cables, the board is for 3.5 mm cable. So for, say, Ipod, I'd neet 2 Y cables - to go from the board to the interrupt and then from interrupt back to 3.5mm Ipod. Am I right? Have you seen ground loop interrupt for 3.5mm connection anywhere?

already has 1 y-adapter so you would only need 1 more y adapter.

is there a reason why you suggested RCA GLI on first page of this thread? it looks that 3.5 mm would be easier to use (no RCA adapter

The PAC GLI is what I meant to recommend, not specifically the RCA version. That's just the only version I offer. I also listed right below that a link to the two that Crutchfield offers, both PAC GLI's and both work equally well.

Jazzy, I have had an issue this week. Just wanted your input before I take things apart. I have been loosing the right channel off and on for no aparent reasons. I am ausming that it is just a loose connection, but is there anything else I chould check out?

Thanks,

Hrm...yea, it sounds like a loose cable...could be either end. If it's the board I'll send you a replacement though. I did have one trouble jack that seemed to crap out, so let me know what you find out. Hopefully just reseating the plugs should do the trick.

My Internet friend Leg GT Chris (AWDPirates.net in the house!) told my wife about this, and I didn't believe it was possible. I am buying a Leg GT wagon, (that will make 2 LGTs in the garage YAY!) and I was getting ready to drop a couple of grand getting an Alpine system jammed into the cubby, just to get CD quality iPod sound.

I'm definitely going to try this first! Thanks!

One question: do I have to wire anything to power the GLI?

Never start modding, kids. It's too late for me, save yourselves!

Hooray for 07+ AccessPORT!

Nope, a GLI is a passive transformer. It doesn't require any power.

Fritz says "word!" 9 months later and I couldn't be happier! If I could only remember to use the RPT button...

$35 hack + 1 hour install = Happy Chris

Ok, I also bought an iPod power/audio wiring harness, a GLI and a mobile phone mount, so a little more than $35, but still...

brhays, let me know if you need links to the power/audio and/or mobile phone mount.

No, the GLI does not need it's own power. It is just a transformer.

Jazzy,

Do you remember by chance if there's an easy way to get power for an amp from the radio, so that the amp would turn on only when the head unit is on? Someone here mentioned that power antenna wire would not work for this because antenna shots off when CD player is playing.

Hrm...if it turns off when the CD player is playing then, no...I dunno what to use. For myself, I'm going to use the high level inputs on an amp to run a sub and it autosenses audio on the high level inputs (but not the low for some reason) negating the need for a ACC signal.

Hey, this is a great thread. I've been reading it all day instead of studying. I just got an 06 outback 2.5i on Sunday and was pretty bummed about the lack of auxillary inputs - but quickly found this thread.

In my old ford escort, I have a cd mp3 playing head unit with RCA auxillary inputs, and was dreading the idea of replacing the stereo on the outback given how nice it looks.

So I've ordered the Jazzy, the only question I have is over the GLI. I've been using my Iriver in the ford escort without any problems with ground loop - but I use a power inverter & a regular plug to power it because I don't actually have the cigarette lighter adapter) This has always been pretty clean (I used to have a creative nomad with a cigarette plug power thingie and it had lots of engine whine). So my theory's always been that using the power inverter, there's probably something that cleans up the GLI.

So before I do the install - do you guys think that the power inverter cleans out the ground loop interference? I'm probably going to use that in the outback for power as well, just 'cause it's damned handy to be able to use regular plugs instead of buying the car specific power cables.

And... most of you guys are installing the GLI filters and hiding them behind the stereo, but looking at the one that crutchfield sells - is there any reason that if in the future I decide I want a GLI, I can't just hook it into the end of the cable/plug taht I have stashed in one of those cubby boxes and use it there to clean up the GLI and not bother opening up the dash again? Other than it'll be a little bit ugly?

Catriona, congrats on the new subie. Yea, I've used AC transformers with similar results to your own. If they don't ground one side of the transformer, it actually isolates itself from the battery, so you shouldn't get ground loop noise, but these things are rarely so simple to predict.

To give you a straight answer for now though, yes, you can just add the 1/8" GLI from crutchfield later pretty easily if you find you do get noise...and if not...then you can just forget about it and enjoy the music. :)

If you have the factory sub, it probably has a suitable signal to work with... just need a DVM to find it, I would imagine.

Even if you don't have the factory sub, I imagine there's a rear-connecting jack on the stereo for it, so, again, it should be easy enough to find.

I just recieved part 1 of the harnesses that I need for my sub/amp install and found that the red wire is 12 volt ignition/switched, Yellow is 12 volt battery/constant, blue is 12 volt remote turn on.

This may be a bit off topic but I wanted to thank Jazzy for not calling this an "iPod connector, or iPod input mod, or iPod something.." I can't stand it when people use the iPod as a blanket term for mp3 players. I've had a hard drive based mp3 player since my 4gb Archos many years ago and I would never consider an iPod. They're great little fashion accessories that Apple has marketed the hell out of and they are well designed but I think I’m going to punch the next person who tells me their aftermarket radio has an iPod hookup when it’s just an aux in. Flame suit activated…
