BD window switch LED

Recommended Posts

So I'm in the process of changing all of the light in my car to red LED's. I have done the 10 dollar 10 minute gauge mod and the HVAC lights.

My current set up:

My problem is little things like that stupid green LED on the window switch bugs me. So I took it apart thinking it was just a bulb I could order. It isn't, it is an LED soldered in.

Taking the window switches out: (Sorry no pictures of this)

1. Pull the door panel, there is on screw by the door handle and one below the arm rest. Pop all of the pop tab things and your door panel should come off.

2. There are a bunch of screws on the back holding the black molding with the door handle, windows switches and door locks. Unscrew this and take it off.

3. Take the window switch cover off and finish unscrewing the gold screws. I forget what screws you need to take off but if I believe the metal bracket has to come out.

Taking apart the window switch:

1. There are a total of 4 tabs for the back cover to come off (Black tabs). They are tough to get out but they do come out.

2. There are 6 more tabs to pull the white "guts" out (White tabs). Same as above just pop them out.

Pictures of the tabs (My good camera broke so we have to deal with crappy pictures):

Now you should have the "guts" pulled out and they should look like this:

There is a little LED right above the drivers side switch (the clear one). You will need to take a soldering iron and melt the old LED out and solder the new one in. Make sure you don't get solder everywhere because you could cause a short in the switches.

The LED I used was a 3mm (T1) LED that I bought from Radioshack. I bought the 20 LED combo pack because that was the only red 3mm they had (Part # 276-1622), but they do also carry a 2 pack of the 3mm (T1) red LED's.

The LED is brighter then the old one so I painted the clear plastic on the window switch cover and it dimmed the light perfectly.

I don't have a picture of the LED after painting the switch cover but here is a picture before, notice how bright it is

I am not responsible for anything you do. Use common sense don't touch the end of the hot solder iron ;)
