f10ants
Let me start this out with saying I know this description may sound strange but I don't know where to start with this. Today I was driving my '06 legacy and was backing it out of a parking spot so gave it just a little touch of gas and let my foot off as I always do. But this time the car really hesitated, and the RPM's dropped to almost nothing, it felt like it was going to stall but didn't. I put it in drive and went down the road. I was stopped at the traffic light just up the road and put the car in neutral and touched the gas the same way. It did the same thing. hesitate/ rough idle/ shaking/ feeling like almost a stall.... I have no idea what to do with this. No CEL. And when I drive it without being stopped it acts normal. I have approx 125k miles. Please help point me in the right direction on this! If there are already threads on this topic please let me know, I've looked but didn't come up with anything.

If there are already threads on this topic please let me know, I've looked but didn't come up with anything. I have a few followup questions. 1) Did you change your timing belt at 105K miles? 2) When was your last major service (30/60/90/120k services) if so what was done on it? 3) When did you change your accessory belts (the ones that drive the alternator, ps pump, ac) When it hesitates, do the lights dim on you? -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. CoolHandLuke12
mine also does the same thing...got worse today when pulling into a parking spot. however a couple days ago i got a CEL of P0172..running too rich, cleared the code, and its been off for 2 days, MAF sensor cleaned, no vacuum leaks, and just ordered a front o2 sensor, in case in comes back on. Coolant is fine, i have an oil leak, which has been monitored, and refilled oil to make sure it stays full. ill continue to monitor with any further details. subscribed
f10ants
Thank you for the follow up! 1- Timing belt is original. 2- I'll look at my records tonight when I get home from work, not sure. I did do the plugs and wires and serp belt about 110k. I'll see what else I've done. 3- Accessory belts are original still. I am getting a little tightness when the turning the steering wheel on cold mornings and/or if I get the wheel turned to the end ("lock"). I've read on here to change out the ps fluid and plan to do that this coming weekend. Think its related?
AZP Installs
I bet your ps/alt belt has stretched since you installed it. Try tightening it up and see if that clears up the ps issue and the hesitation. My guess is you are getting some slippage of the alt belt causing a drop in voltage and thus the hesitation. Also at 125k miles you are really on borrowed time on your timing belt. That should be done between 100-105k miles with a complete kit. Probably not related to your issue, although you could get hesitation at low rpms if your belt is starting the stretch. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. f10ants
Thank you! I've found some DIY/ How to's here on the timing belt... looks like a big job. I don't see any walk through/diy/how to on the ps/acc belt. I'll see what i can find in other places though. Maybe I'll get lucky. I'm pretty good mechanically but haven't tried this in the past. What do you estimate this kind of thing would cost from a mechanic? How long should it take me in the garage? I think I'll start w the acc/ps belt first and see how that goes. Its still cold outside so I'll wait until spring weather to attach the timing belt if i think i can do it myself. Thanks for all of your input! AZP Installs
To tighten the alt/ps belt takes a 10mm and/or 12mm wrench. There is a set bolt and adjustment bolt right near the alternator. Loosen the set bolt and the. Tighten up the adjuster. This will take play out of the belt and hopefully fix your issue. The timing belt runs $715 from us. A bit more from most mechanics. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. f10ants
follow up question: If I change the acc/ps belt what else should I replace while I'm in there? If I change the timing belt what else should I replace? water pump? gears? (I apologize if these are dumb questions)
Mandy05
getting the exact same thing at 117k but only after clearing p2097 running rich code. curious if unrelated since you don't have a code. hopefully it stays cleared after replacing both o2 sensors. wow the timing belt sounds no better than if I needed a cat... mmmmspecb
Try to clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner. All general maintenance items should be checked as well. It's unbeleivable how much better my car felt after new ACC belts, new plugs and a clean MAF sensor!

f10ants
I've been able to do more research from what everyone has said and it looks like my issue is really the belts. I'm having the ps, ac, and timing belts all done. I think this will take care of it. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Still no CEL's etc though. Mandy05
How are the new belts? Excited the AFR sensor cured my code and hesitation. WooHoo! Only issue now is she's clattering more until she warms up. Oil level is good as far as I can figure on this stick. Synthetic only has 3k on it. cobb
My car did just as your described and so I took it subaru and had them do two oil flushes back to back to clean everything out, because just like you I had 125k when my car started doing this especially in a drive through or traffic and hasent done it since
f10ants
I've ordered the parts but the USPS isn't a model of efficiency, as they advertise, so they haven't shown up yet. I'm pretty sure its the belts. The lights dim when I turn the wheel more then 30 degrees or so. And if its cold?! SCREAMS! ...can't wait to get this taken care of!
