In your downloadable instructions, does it say how to pull the radio out ? Cause I haven't clicked that far since I figured I should not get too far ahead of myself. Now I realize I wanna take out the ashtray assembly and need some instructions.

Nate - the mod is compatible with the Saabaru as long as it has the 6CD radio.

I need help:

 

Facts for japanese outback owners:

1- The Kenwood HU has a 20 pin rectangular input for an external CD changer and NAVI system, and a selector for band-cd-tape (yes, it has a cassete deck)-chr.

2- The CHR option does not work if no cd changer is connected, the same as the tape option does not work if no tape is in the player.

3- The optional CD changer is a kenwood c-929, with a special Subaru cable to fit the rectangular HU input, that does not have the standard 13 pin round Kenwood CD changer input, that cable seems not to be sold.

4- The CD changer must return some sort of "protocol" to be detected as such by the HU, not just connecting the cables to audio chanels (I did that and it doesn't work).

5- Kenwood makes the kca-ip500 adaptor to connect the ipod to combatible kenwood HU, with 13 pin round plug input, so I assume it returns the right protocol for it to be detected as a CD changer.

6- I have the pin diagrams for the Subaru HU rectangular plug, the c-929 (out to radio) changer, and the pin input of two kenwood radios compatible with both the kca-ip500 adaptor and the c-929 changer with the standard (not Subaru) cable.

 

Now, the question is, if I get hold of a 13 pin kenwood female plug, as the one on the back of some aftermarket units (should not be that difficult), and wire it to the right equivalent pins of the Subaru HU rectangular input (by the way, computer power source cable terminals fit very nice on the pins):

1- Could I connect a kca-ip500 to that?

2- What cable do i need to connect to what? (some are easy, but CLK, DATA C, DATA H, CH CON, etc?), I am only an electronic fan.

I include pictures of the pinouts.

Jazzy, do you have some nice big clear pictures somewhere ? In the installation manual (PDF) they are pretty small and I would much rather display them on my laptop when doing the work. I know you posted some pix from your firt installation of this board, 3 composite pictures of 6 individual shots but I am looking for bigger images still. Thank you.

I got a stupid question: the Jazzy device came wrapped in some plastic. Do I take it off...or do I mount it as it is ? Is it heat resistant ? Burn proof ?

Leave it on. It prevents shorts once mounted internally.

 

The material is Polyolefin, and is not rated as flame resistant, but it is capable of withstanding heat up to 260*C / 500*F for 4 hours. At that temp, the entirety of your radio would have melted down first. You can read more on it here:

Another satisfied (in this case, second-time) customer! Just installed the GLI and PAC-iPod kit. Jazzy sent the kit out right before the holidays and I received it yesterday. Install was a breeze (soldering = fun!). Now I've got my iPod hooked up to my stereo via the dock connector, which provides a line-level audio signal.

Install is very easy, instructions are unambiguous. I never scratched my head once on the install. Popping off the faceplate was a bit frightenting, not what I expected. Just go slow.

 

The PAC iPod charging cable that Jazzy ships ends up having two inputs, one for the iPod (line level) and one with a stereo mini plug. Turns out both are active for input and I can plug in my Garmin Nuvi into the mini plug and use the MP3 player and get verbal driving directions through the HU.

The 3.5mm mini-stereo plug and RCA's are actually tied together as dual outputs for the iPod. Since everything is tied together though, they *can* work as an alternate input. There's a chance however that if you're not lucky like ZinFreak, the impedances won't be properly matched and either the iPod or your alternate audio device will pull the signal down of the other device.

 

Sometimes things just work out though.

I ordered a Jazzy board about 9 months ago but finally installed it 6 weeks ago. First off, the install was easy and the board works as advertised, great in other words.

 

However, I had an iPod related issue. At first, I just ran the mini stereo jack right into my Nano's headphone jack (I planned on doing a charging solution later). The problem with this was that I typically had to boost to volume up to 20-25 on my head unit to make it listenable. Plus, Soundcheck seemed to not work well at all. Volume level was all over the place from mp3 to mp3.

 

I got the Belkin Auto kit as a charging solution. I realize people here have had problems with it but I figured the preamp would help my situation. Sure enough it did and I've had no overheating problems. It also seems that Soundcheck works better coming from the line-out instead of the headphone jack on the Nano. *shrug*

 

In any event. I have the line-in going to my armrest and then into the Belkin. The dock connector from the Belkin comes out of there to my iPod which rests on the cover of the cupholders. It all works great.

^^^ To run the iPod, the PAC iPod cable that Jazzy sells does the trick. Wire the + & - into the power adapter below the HU/climate control and into the stereo to mini converter. Charging and line level input, no fuss no muss with the volume on the iPod.

 

Finally dumped my camera today. Here's the iPod connected up and my new Spec.B steering wheel (still wrapped up in plastic).

Did this MOD recently. Fantastic, I was so tired of listening to FM static. I have an older AUDIVOX SIRIUS unit in the closed console, ugly but it works. Which of the new/smaller units fit easily in the cubby?

stephenahood - on saturday i will be getting my xm roady xt customly installed into my cubby (w/ it still being able to be closed), along with the AUX-In being installed as well.....

I got the board in a while back and got around to installing it recently. The install was very straight forward and it works great! I cannot thank you enough Jazzy.

jazzy, I finished the install flawlessly and it was really simple, given the detailed instructions, but I have a question. It sounds like the low frequencies are being cutoff... i don't know if this is caused by the RMI filter, or not but its very noticeable. I'm going to open up the stereo again this weekend to make sure the connections are all seated firmly... but has anyone else experienced this?

What audio source are you using?

 

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the GLI. I roadtripped with a friend this weekend and I hooked up his iPod through the PAC GLI and we had to turn the bass down because it was so boomy. I was using the headphone out and a pre-amp though instead of a line level out...

I'm using a Sirius S50, which has a 1/8" stereo line out connector. Any ideas?
