Now THAT is what black should look like!

Recommended Posts

Wolfgang Sealant on Wednesday and then I came back on Thursday to do another vehicle and decided to put a coat of Pinnacle Souveran on top. Dang me! I told him that I wanted it to be so black that when he stopped and Darth Vader DIDN'T get out that people would be surprised. ;)

These are with my cell phone again since my wife needed the camera, but someone else was there with a real camera taking better pictures. All I can say is that if you have the option of getting a jet black paint job with zero metal flake in it, then this is definitely a great combination. I would love to see this car in an environment with lots of things to reflect. I can imagine it on a road in the mountains surrounded by trees and being absolutely invisible because of how well it reflects right now. It's like a mirror! I love Wolfgang and Souveran...

It is definitely tricky. Without a speck of metal flake in it anywhere you really have to get everything out for it to look right. There is nothing to hide any imperfections that are left. This wasn't 100% perfect when I was done with it, but it was really really close. Another two or three hours of work could have restored it to factory fresh, but he really beats on it and it would have been ruined in a week. It is a 2008 and he already has over 80,000 miles on it. So I did the best I could.

Here's the other problem with BMW jet black. BMW does not do the greatest job on their paint, so the orange peel is just nasty and it stands out a ton. This one is an 09 or 10 M3 with the same paint and you can see how bad it is.

But from a distance it looks ok.

Still... You can't hide orange peel if you are going to use that color. You'd think for the amount of money you have to pay for those cars that they would take a little more care in making them look better.

I would sell you my soul if you could keep my OBP shining like that.

Well, I couldn't keep it shining like that, but I could keep it shining like this:

;) It's actually easier to make OBP look sharp than jet black. Especially BMW jet black. Bimmer paint is not the easiest to work with. Our Subie paint may be soft enough to scratch by looking at it, but at least it polishes out really clear without needing to bust out the sandpaper.

Unfortunately, orange peel like that has become the norm on most cars, even high end. The paint on my old 2001 VW was the only car I have owned that I could say had an almost flawless finish. My Legacy has some terrible defects in the clear coat and pretty bad orange peel in some areas, but you really only notice them in the right lighting.

I've done a few. Not Ocean Blue Metallic, but I've done a few black and a Lapis Blue. They definitely come out really well. Soft paint that scratches fairly easily, but it always polishes out perfectly without a whole lot of effort. Other than really deep scratches and rock chips (which happen easily) it is easy anyway.

This is an 01 996, so similar paint to yours as far as process.

He actually just had the whole front end of this car covered with a clear bra material. The whole hood, both fenders, and the bumper. He drives it like a rental and it was just getting hammered. So he repainted the entire front end and wanted it protected. Talk about a pain in my ass to detail now. lol I've got some good stuff for the clear bra, but not much of it and when it is gone I'm not sure what I'll use to maintain it. Darn companies going out of business...

OCD: off topic question.

What do you do for or have suggestions for repair to my driver's side seat lateral support that has severely discolored and has an eraser sized pin hole in it??? Needs interior Leather repair.

Utah repair options?

I'm not sure what to tell you on that one. I would just hit the yellow pages and look for leather repair shops. That could be kinda spendy though. The one time I've looked for leather repair it was for the one inch split seam on my motorcycle seat. They quoted me $90 bucks to repair it. !!!!! So I can imagine having a hole in the leather could be cost a bit. I'm really not in the restoration business though, so I'm sorry I'm not too much help on that.
