Head gasket replacement - A few questions

Recommended Posts

So, i'm in the process of replacing my head gaskets (there is coolant leaking out of the driver-side externally and exhaust in the coolant). Some details of my car: 119,500 miles; no engine mods; full synthetic since 15k miles.

What size is the crank bolt? Its larger than 21mm (the largest socket I have) and I don't have a micrometer to measure.

The throttle body on the manifold side is completely carbon/oiled covered. This doesn't seem normal. I expected some buildup, but this looks like another level. Opinions? What could cause this if it isn't normal?

Any ideas on getting the bolt that holds the crank pulley loose? I've given it two shots of penetrating oil and used a cheater bar but no luck. Maybe an overnight soak will do the trick. I've gotten as far as I can go and this has stopped all progress.

I've cleaned the throttle body and i've done some of the intake manifold. Looks like it will come out almost as good as new.
