ebo03
I had a Subimods harness that blew multiple fuses. As I recall from other threads this is common with their harness. So I bought a harness from AZP Installs about 2 years ago. On a couple of ocassions I have been gone for a few days with the car garaged and I came home to a dead battery. Dead as in the car wouldn't even attempt to crank. Just a click when turning over the key. I discovered with a multimeter that with the Hella relay powered up there are about 230 milliamps being drawn. Unhook the power source and it drops to the teens. Anybody with an AZP harness experiencing the same issue? Just wondering as it seems unlikely that I would have hooked it up incorrectly.
Perscitus
Ping AZP via PM or in the Tri-State forum. I have no experience with their harness but have seen a few horror stories with the Subispeed and Subimods v1 harness (they recently released a much better looking v2 harness). Personally I'm running a Lightwerkz harness and have had 0 issues with it since 2010. Had a second one installed on my kid brother's 2015 WRX in April. 0 issues thus far as well. ebo03
Great if you have a multimeter and could check it but if not could you see if the relay is warm to the touch? Mine is warm when the car is off. This just seems like a bizarre issue unless somehow the harness is incorrectly wired.

ebo03
Bought a Lightwerkz harness and issue is gone. Amazing that I've gone through two harnesses from two different vendors. The Subimods harness was blowing fuses and the AZP harness was killing relays. I noticed the Lightwerkz harness uses a different brand of relay than the others. Rutchard
Wasn't there an issue a while back where Hella was including different relays with the horns? I don't remember if they were updated, defective, or just different... Providing a proper relay with the harness is a good CYA move on Lightwerkz part for sure. fredrik94087
I got my "kit" close to 1.5 years ago from subimods, I believe. Never had an issue, never had a dead battery with the car sitting for a week (and I am using a smaller lightweight battery) "It's within spec" - SOA "Depth is only shallowness viewed from the side." - Fredism "So, how much did it cost for your car to be undriveable ." - Stephen (very close friend) "You have done so much it would be stupid to go back." - Sunny of Guru Electronics 2018Q50RS | 2015WrxThread | Shrek
AF_3C2
I bought my kit off Amazon- never sounded as loud as the first kit I had on my WRX, and then after a couple months they just stopped working all together. I suspect it is my relay- will need to get a new one if and when I decide to put them on my '14.
acumenhokie
I have the subimods harness. It gave me trouble with either grounding or relays early on but nothing lately. That said it could be drawing power even when turned off but I wouldn't know it because I have the car on a trickle charger.
AF_3C2
I built my harness from some thick gauge (16g I think) speaker wire- probably not the best solution.
ebo03
Looking back on it I would probably just make one instead of being lazy. I made one for my 06 STI and never had any issues.
nstg8r
I built my harness from some thick gauge (16g I think) speaker wire- probably not the best solution. As long as it's copper wire, and not just copper-coated aluminum (or just plain aluminum) you should be good. If it the Cu/Al stuff, go with 14awg or not at all. Personally, I only use speaker wire for low current solutions such as for LED lighting, but for anything 10A and up, I definitely go with primary wire. Another good choice would be to use an AC electrical extension cord rated for at least 15A.
minuccims
Subimods released a V2 harness. Looks much better. Never had a problem with the original harness for 95K miles through three winters. http://subimods.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/fda82b21aeaf2fd22f2725bae7fc7ba8/r/s/rsz_mk3_0892_3.jpg http://subimods.com/subimods-hella-horn-bracket-and-wiring-harness-combo.html SubieSpeed has a harness now as well that will work for the 5th Gen: http://www.subispeed.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/473x473/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/img_4252_2.jpg http://www.subispeed.com/2015-subaru-wrx/exterior/subispeed-hella-supertone-horn-wiring-harness#.VMrgzWjF__E

Rutchard
At least Subimods is sticking a fuse on their harnesses now. Before, they told me it didn't need a fuse, I threw that garbage away and wrote them off for good after that. If they were willing to potentially burn someone's car down, I don't want to do business with them.
AF_3C2
On top of the harness, I bought a stick of Aluminum bar from Home Depot and created my own mounting bracket for the horns- so they were spread out a bit in the grill instead of close-set when only using the bracket on the horns. error
Hella Supertones draw only 5.5A each - should be ok to run from the stock wiring, no?
EdC
Does anyone have a DIY install for Hella Horns on a 2011 GTL. Most interested on how and where they are mounted. Using existing fasteners or is additional mounting hardware needed? Ed
foxrider28
Most people do the "bro-tie" bracket behind the grill. Either way you will most likely have to either make some custom mounts or find some random place to mount them both. You can just use 1 in the stock location if you'd like. Your best bet is to do a google image search of "5th gen legacy hella horns" you'll see what others have done.

EdC
Guys thanks for the replies. How did you "fish" the cable into the relay compartment? ED
EdC
Okay, I see that custom cable as its own relay. Just go to either horn connection. Thanks
