Guest *Jedimaster*
OK- so I had my stock WRX muffler lying around and decided to take the chrome tips off it and put them on my OB XT They were easy to remove- undo one screw and drill out two welds.: Next, I took the mufflers off the XT- two nut and bolt combos each and two rubber hangers each. Yes, I did start it to see what it would sound like- it was surprisingly quiet even with no mufflers. A few screws later, they were on the mufflers and look pretty sharp, IMO They don't line up perfectly on each side, so I'll have to get under there and adjust them, but until they make something nice looking for us XT owners, we have a nice and free alternative. Unless you don't have a stock WRX muffler lying around ;)

c_hunter
I tried the same thing -- had a stock WRX muffler laying around -- but did not like the fit. Ended up getting some $8 oval tips from Advance Auto, which fit real nicely and were cake to install (no need to remove mufflers): What I like about the oval tips is that they have a scarfed outlet, which matches up with the stock muffler's tailpipe slant. kmartin
Those look great...but didn't you just lose about an inch off your departure angle?

c_hunter
Karen, I think I lost about 3/8", not sure what that translates into for the departure angle. Having a scarfed/angled outlet helps minimize the impact. Craig
gtguy
Hey, why do the Outback tips point down, instead of straight out, like the GT? This makes me wonder if Outback folks can just wait until GT folks lose their minds and start making their cars louder, and pick up some stock GT mufflers for cheap, presuming that they fit. TLS
I thought the wagons had the same exhaust as the LGT? At least the wagon in the brochure has the dual oval tips like the LGT sedan.
agctr
Can someone please tell me why the exhausts actually point down on the OT instead of straight out like the GT ? Just curious PS. Jedi, and you wonder why yr wife is always in horror when she sees the car in pieces............ My heart skips when I see pictures of your car in pieces. Guest *Jedimaster*
LOL it's no big deal- it started out that way and it'll end that way some day. The tips go down because there's no cut out in the OB bumper- I'm working on a muffler system right now that will go straight out- just need to find the perfect tips- actually, the GT ones look great to me, but nobody's giving them up yet. I'll also be removing some material form the bumper to make room for the pipes.

The tailpipe on my Jeep points down as well.....it comes in handy when you are up to the bumpers in water. The last thing you want to do is suck water in through the pipe if you stall and having the tips turned down helps to keep this from happening (water doesn't want to travel up when there is pressure in the pipes). I know it a longshot that any Outback owners EVER encounter a situation like this but it may have a practical reason for being designed that way. Anyone else have anything more concrete for a reason? Guest *Jedimaster*
Only other thing I can think of is that a pipe pointing down will usually sound throatier, due to the reverberation off the road of the exhaust note. That sentence sucked, but I'm tired.
