1996 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD 4" Lift

Recommended Posts

Just to confirm, these headers are installed in a Legacy with the 2.2l engine and they fit? The website says they are not compatible but if I can get 10-15hp more out of my engine, that would be awesomeness.

Hi zcrow, Yes they fit perfectly. As long as you have dial-exhaust port 2.2L they will fit. Well worth the $135.99 with free shipping. The car sounds better and runs better.

I could be wrong but, i believe that all the 16 valve 2.2L engines have dual exhaust. If anyone can verify this, please do. It's very easy to check. Look at the Y-pipe at the bottom of the engine you should be able to see the exhaust and the number of ports on each side.

That's interesting, wonder why Subaru used single port on some cars and dual port on others. My car is a '96 L Wagon 2.2L 16V (4EAT automatic transmission.)

My Subaru is at the local mechanic today. I'm having all the timing belt idlers, water-pump and thermostat changed and of course new anti-freeze. Since the flooding, the idler bearings have been getting louder and louder.

I asked the mechanic about the exhaust ports, if he know why some had single and some dual. And he didn't have an answer??? This shop works on a LOT of Subaru's. Every other car in Telluride I think is a Subaru. :)

Just got my car back....Ahhhhh that engine is so quite now, you can hear the sweet sound of the headers.

I'm surprised that the bearings (idlers) didn't disintegrate they were in such bad condition. The timing belt tensioner bearing sounded like it had rocks in it. The car has about 216,000 miles, the idlers and water pump you could tell were original. They had to be changed!

Bummer zcrow, the header pipes completely change the power curve on that engine. Much smoother acceleration and as I’ve mentioned, faster shifting.

Another causality of the flooding: A few days ago I couldn’t get my car to start. I finally it started after hitting the started a couple of times with a hammer. I replaced it with one from ebay.com, it’s a remanufactured starter for $73.00 with free shipping. The installation it was a pain-in-the-a**. I couldn’t remove the lower nut on the starter without removing the bracket holding the automatic transmission dip-stick tube. I might pull apart the old one and see what’s failing. Most likely the water washed all the grease out of the starter and the bendix got stuck.

...much worse...meier motor sports. Thanks for the post.

Out at Swasey's Beach yesterday. About 330 miles round trip from Telluride, Co and the Subaru ran perfectly. That's the longest trip i've taken since drowning the car.

Swasey's Beach is a beautiful sandy beach, just north of the town of Green River, Ut and on the East bank of the Green River. The water temp was about 70F with a fast current.

I've been hearing some noises at the rear of the car. I tracked it down to failing rear sway bar links. Some very expensive Perrin Performance links. I emailed Perrin about the problem and they are sending me brand new spherical bearings for the links. Thank you Perrin.

The new spherical bearings from Parrin showed up this afternoon. I was able to tap out the old bearings and tap in the new ones with a 17mm socket.

Hi 96outback not much need for a snorkel out here. I live in South West part of Colorado and I tend to do most of my road trips is between Telluride and Moab, Ut. High desert to desert terrain. It's pretty dry out here. I might have to cross an occasional stream. Usually by mid summer, they're just dry creek beds. Though if i lived anywhere else with more water, i would consider it.

I just had to poke some fun your way.Wht say you now?;)

swcolegacyl, i had to sign up and follow your thread, i have a 96 roo wagon 2.5 dual cam. money is tight but this has inspired me so much. it can be done in small steps. thank you so much for the info your leaving here.

my roo has 398k miles right now. just did the timing belt and replaced the front crank seal and cam seals. i play with the street racers drifting and also run circles around the 4bys when hunting. i miss getting to those special spots my lifted truck was able to. with this set up i'll be able to again.

thanks!

Back out in Paradox last weekend. It’s already winter in Telluride, so Paradox offers some welcome warmth and some very fun roads to explore. The Subaru is still running great and the having the Grabber AT2’s (tires) on this car is amazing.

Wray Mesa: Y1 Road witch connects to Wray Mesa Road through beautiful pine forest and great views.

$10.00 at the car wash to get all the mud off. But is was worth it. :)

First descent vid with the GoPro

Same area of Wray Mesa: In the video I’m heading west toward the Utah border on Wray Mesa Rd. The white capped peaks of the La Sal’s are in the for ground. Moab is just on the other side those mountains.

Hi all, been awhile. I just bought a 1999 Outback 30th Anniversary Limited Addition. 203,000 miles, overall in excellent condition for $2000.00. everything works, 2 sunroofs!!!! leather heated seats. I bought it from the original owner.

I'm going to move all the upgrades from my 1996 over to the 1999. Bit of a project:
