Pin point tranny noise..

Last fall I removed my starter motor and lubed it up because every winter the starter would stick on every so often. The job was fairly simple and after I reinstalled everything I notice a high pitch whining sound at speeds of 70 mph or so. The noise seemed to be speed dependant so I thought I could narrow the noise down to drive train. Well my 2005 legacy gt has been in for routine service once (timing belt) and the mechanic said it was tire noise.. Took it to a tranny shop and heard the same thing.. now the noise seems to be getting worse and at low speeds when in any gear, but heard better in higher gears ,the sounds is more of a clicking sound. Since having my timing belt replaced I got a flat tire and replaced all four and the sound is still there.. I am baffled and would love if someone could help or point me in the direction of what it could be.. I know it could be a million things, but with subarus is there anything that this issue could be narrowed down to?
