HVAC Display issue.....

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Model is a UKDM Subaru Outback 3.0Rn with the facelifted interior.

I have posted this on the UKLegacy site but thought I would see if anyone this side of the pond had come across this?

Opinions and suggestions to a fault that seemingly developed out of nowhere yesterday...

The heater/Temp controls stopped coming on last night. Everything else works including the actual function of the heating/Climate controls. Everything lights up red and the radio still works it is just the actual climate display not coming on which is not helpful!

I am a bit stumped to be honest and may resort to gettng another head unit to test to at least rule that out. All associated fuses seem fine and everything else works on the car. I know it would have to be coded but I will get the hour before it locks to see if the display comes alive on a subsitute one and if it does I can get it coded to the car (This maybe UKDM only I think).

Any secret fuses/Tips I need to know about or other suggestions gratefully received?

I have removed the head unit today and all feed wires appear fine with no apparent breaks or chafing

Just to repeat the climate control system works fine as do all the other functions of the Radio/HVAC unit - Just the actual heater HVAC display!

Best regards,

its a common problem with the integrated radio/hvac, well documented on this site. Its the actual circuit board thats the problem. Try pressing on and around the screens, sometimes thats enough to get the displays back on, but most of the time, owners often just get another used unit.

Hello,

Yes I am leaning towards a Head unit failure. It is odd though that everything else works just not the temperature & function controls. No amount of tapping, pressing or thumping seems to have any effect. I hope to have another unit later next week to plug in and try.

If that works then I am off to my friendly Subaru SpPecialist for them to code it to the car (UK Only I think!).

Thanks for your response which kind of confirms my fears.

best regards,

David

You don't need to have it coded - they don't have security codes like some other makes do. They just swap right in. That's why you see a lot of people using later model HU's with minor wiring additions to make things like ipod integration or aux input work.

There's another member posting the exact problem right now in the 05-09 Legacy section of this site FWIW.

UK versions do. Some silly law there requires it, there is a section in the SSM manual about how to do it.

Hello,

Utc_pyro is right - It is a UK thing only forced upon us by the insurance companies - That and a high spec alarm! However my local specialist only charged me 25GBP to sort it so I am OK with that.

Oddly an official Subaru dealer usually has no idea what you are talking about when you ask them to code the radio even when you quote the SSM Manual at them and then they want to keep the car for a day! Thankfully my independent did this for me last time in 5 minutes flat!

Rougeben83 - Thaks for posting that - It is exactly my problem and I think you have nailed it with the head unit!

Thanks all.

Best regards,

David
