HID Foglight Install

Recommended Posts

Thanks for this walk-though. Just finished and it took me about 2hrs from the time I stepped in the garage, including the soldering and dust cap alteration, to when I rolled the car back off the ramps. I did it with the front bumper cover in place.

Thanks again!

- Allen.

Apologies for bumping up this old post, but it looks like the pics aren't working again. Only the first pic shows up for me.

Fixed again. Damn Mark Zuckerberg. Its strange that this is the only forum that my pics disappear from. And the only post for that matter.

Pictures are down again. I would like to complete this project sometime in the next two weeks. Thanks, OP!

BTW, try uploading it on imgur.com. Best site for hosting images.

I would just upload the pics directly into the post so they are not hosted by a website. That way they will never crash. I would like to see Post #21 pictures if possible :)

Also, where are you guys mounting your fog light ballasts?

Fixed them all - uploaded right to the thread. No more shenanigans! Fixed #21 too :dm:

I just mounted mine to any flat surface I could find. My low's mounted underneath the edge of the fender panels. Forget where my highs are mounted. I think one is on the washer fluid box, and the other is just on part of the frame. Just used 3M VHB tape.

Great thread instructions!! Def. helped me install my new Diode Dynamics 3000k Fog lights. Modding the caps and re-splicing the wires were a little tedious but with the right tools it came out perfect and only took me 2 1/2 hours (mostly because I took my time looking for a nice mounting spot and making sure I cut the caps correctly. I sprayed some rubber sealer around the grommet to ensure no moisture gets in just incase.

Here are some pics!!

The Drem. worked great and I cut the circles a little bigger than 7/8 to ensure the grommet has walls to wrap around. Then sprayed with sealer.

I actually went a different route with the install, and drilled a roughly 1" hole in the conical section of the dust cap. I placed the wires and all in the cap the way you would with the lows (with the H3 wires going into the normal cap receptacle), and just had to finagle the wires around to get the cap to go on. It might've been more of a pain to get the cap on, but I think it's way better than hacking up the H3 HID bulb harness and potentially voiding the warranty from the HID company (DDM in my case... lifetime, so decent).

I just did this today with a kit from DiodeDynamics. Like Rock_2.5GT above, instead of hacking up the factory harness and removing the back of the dust cap, I drilled a 7/8" hole in the side and put the grommet in there:

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d122/sbanman/car%20pics/20150125_1330421.jpg

You might want to grind off some of the ribs on the outside to get the grommet to sit nicely without folding over.

Then, since the HID harness had two male connectors for the triggering connectors, and the factory connectors have one male, one female, I made a simple adapter harness to connect the ground side of the two:

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d122/sbanman/car%20pics/20150125_1330491.jpg

All connected up:

Note that you only really have to make this connection on one side (driver's side), since there will (usually) only be one trigger connector going to the relay. You can just tape up the red and black wires on the other side.

Honestly, the most time-consuming part of the whole process was trying to blindly fit the cap back onto the back of the housing, since I didn't remove the front bumper and instead went at it from underneath. There's actually lots of room to work, it's just not easy to see what you're doing!

I installed 35w 6000K HID on my car this evening! I modded my Cap differently as well. I removed the O-Ring, and actually took a utility blade and cut about a .5" slot on the bottom of the cap. Now that theres a small opening on the bottom, run the wires to the little slot and replace the O-ring. Lock the cap back and viola!

Also anyone have issues with their HID's pulsating or flickering? Theyre on, but still pulsating

Make sure your lights are switched on. They will automatically turn on because of your DLR's but it will send low power, which will cause them to flicker. Or disconnect your DRL. My headlights / fogs would flicker if I drop the E-brake without turning my headlights on.

Yea i have disabled DRL's and i also have it wired so i can run parking lights and fogs only. I have been driving with them on the past couple days and its been fine so far. I did order a pair of Capacitors though. That should do the trick

If you haven't installed an HID relay harness yet, I highly recommend doing so! That should be your first step. If that doesn't prevent the flickering, you'll want to add a capacitor. The relay should do the trick though IMO!

Really? I have no relay harness. I do have a pair of capacitors that will be here tomorrow. Hopefully, that will fix the light pulsating! Thanks for your help!

Capacitors are a good first step at preventing flickering, but you really should be running an HID relay harness. It's an added safety precaution worth adding.
