Hey guys this is my first post on here and was wondering if i can get some opinions/ advice on purchasing my first subaru. I found this 2005 at a subaru dealer and looked at it in person, unable to drive it, still in recon, they said they are replacing the rack and pinion. Im in college and need a good reliable car for another 2-3 years or so. I have always liked subarus and now might pull the trigger on one. Are these legacys reliable past 100K? If not what issues might arise (besides norm maint., t-belt and like...)? The car fax looks good the second owner had the car serviced at the dealer its at now so i hope thats a plus. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks in advance guys.

The Legacy GTs are not known for their consistant reliability obviously because of the turbos. It's a wide range of who still has their original equipment manufacturer (OEM) turbo and who have gone through at least two throughout the life of the vehicle. There's one member on this forum who had (or still has; not sure) ~140k on the OEM turbo. I haven't read his previous posts to gauge how hard he's driven while with the OEM turbo. The naturally aspirated ones have a better record even though they might suffer from head gasket issues.

The one good thing is the Carfax looks really good. It's obvious it was well maintained. IMHO I would have the car checked out by an independent mechanic if you can. They can check the Turbo by removing the DP and checking for shaft play. Other than that it would be great if they could do a compression test. Again those two tests would make me alot more comfortable with my purchase.
