Adoniram
So I'm looking at Subaru's site and can't quite understand which parts I really need... There's the valve cover gasket, the outer valve cover gasket, and the inner valve cover gasket. I figure the inner gasket is for the spark plugs, but I can't make heads or tails of the outer gasket vs just the gasket... I only need the passenger side, and there isn't a single parts store in town that has the gaskets in stock, so I figured I'd order OEM. Thanks! Max Capacity
They fit on the back of the cams if I remember right. Into the head not the VC. I can't post pictures here but in my thread, got some new stuff for engine R&R, I believe there is a picture showing them. They didn't come in the gasket kit, but the guy's at the dealer parts counter took care of me. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). ripemeat
you can reuse yours if you don't break them. but if you want extras just in case they are not in the gasket kits. also, buy a tube of fujibond at the dealer

Adoniram
Ok, so I'm guessing it really is the valve cover gasket... all the oil return lines look good and dry. What do you think? http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/00F79CA0-17EC-4307-B306-B9FD4BF0F6B4-3176-0000015265BAF000.jpg
Nrw
yup leaky valve cover gasket. Atleast it isn't too horrible to replace. Tight but not a nightmare.

derffred
Mine has been leaking for a while, just started dripping onto the exhaust this morning, as I smelled oil burning a minute after startup. I have the Outer & Inner Gaskets, but need the half-moons pieces as well. I'll be doing this in my driveway on Sunday. Woohoo! (assuming I can get those Half-moon gaskets - anyone have part #'s??) Adoniram
wait, outer AND inner? I thought there was just the valve cover gasket, and the 2 half moons...

Max Capacity
Why don't you stop by the auto parts store and see what they have for a VC gasket set ? It can't be worse then the OEM gasket that seems to leak all the time...you may be better with after market. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. derffred
There's 4 half-moon seals total right? I only bought two I was just about to go tackle this in the driveway, but not if I don't have all the parts.
Adoniram
Thought it has not been confirmed in this thread, I believe there's 4 (one for each spark plug). I bought a valve cover kit which comes with the gasket for each side, plus 4 halfmoons (2 for each side)
ripemeat
there's 4. one for each cam. the reason you need them is because in the factory when they mill out the cam journals
Max Capacity
How many miles on the spark plugs ? Might as well replace them while your in there. You can see 2 of the 1.2 moons on the left side; http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4778.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4771.jpg 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
