A rattle at 2k rpm

Recommended Posts

Not 2k to 3k, exactly at 2k rpm I hear a rattle in every gear shift.

I'm not really concerned about it, or should I be ?

It's similar to the infamous dash rattle most of use have.

Scenario: *engine revving * 1k > 1.3k > 1.7k > 2.0 [rattle!] > 2.3k [no rattle] > 3k > shift and repeat.

I checked the heat shields and they're bolted down pretty tight.

100k, catless uppipe, but stock really

Edit: Came back again, but this time I'm a bit more than stock, lol

I'll try to get a video.

I can hear in towards the front / under the dash area (anywhere between back of the radio to cupholder area)

ITS EVERY TIME THE RPM HITS 2K, never misses a beat

It's only audible for about 1 second

I thought it would be that 14mm bolt that holds the downpipe to transmission coming loose, but that was on tight as well

I had the exact same situation with my '02 Impreza RS...it turned out to be the springs in the clutch plate...they were just a bit loose and rattled at exactly 2200 rpm....both on acceleration and deceleration....SOC put in a new plate on warranty and that was the end of the problem....Maybe???

Ah, I missed this one:

Have you checked the springs were the bolts go through, on the joint between downpipe and midsection?

I had the same rattle once, and one of the two bolts had to be tightend.

dang good idea.

A rattle/noise in a very narrow rpm range during accel AND decel is often the resonance of a loose part.

Since the issue happens at such low rpms, have a friend hold the motor at that speed until you can hear it, while you listen in the engine bay for the noise and try to locate it.
