Chicago Posted December 21, 2012 Share Posted December 21, 2012 I've been battling with the GR2s for a couple months now. Installed both the front and rear (kept stock springs). The fronts seem to be holding up, but the rears are another story. The first one started leaking, clunking after about a week. I replaced that one, and about two weeks later, the other rear began to clunk. Took out the strut, and sure enough, leaking as well. The first one that I replaced seems to be holding up after a few weeks, and now I'm replacing the new blown one. I'm just worried that this problem will keep presenting itself. Has anyone else had these problems? When I got the KYBs, I thought it was a bit of an upgrade from OEM, but now I'm starting to think they are pieces of s#*t. mk6933 Posted December 24, 2012 Share Posted December 24, 2012 OEM are made by KYBs, and KYB new struts are the Excel-G. So I would assume your GR2 are pretty old? Time for a replacement? Blue GT Posted December 27, 2012 Share Posted December 27, 2012 I have/had the excel g on my gt with cobb springs. blew the rears in 24 hours, and the fronts are now toast 2 months later....... maybe there is a bad batch, and my fault for pairing them with cobbs but guys have run stock struts on cobbs for months without issue. Dont recommend using anything more aggressive than a Epic spring with them though. My wifes 08 5EAT has been riding on KYB Excel and Epics for over 30k miles with zero issues. We've installed probably 1000 sets of KYBs in the 12 years we've been working on Subies and have not seen any failures due to springs if you use OEM or slight drops like Epic or Eibach. It could be a bad batch or somehow mis-installed? Not sure why they are failing on you guys.
