Smackmatic
I am going to look at an 05 LGT next week with apx. 70k miles for $11.5K. After reading through the blown turbo post, it seems that most if not all the cars with problems were 05s. Are the turbo problems limited to 05 models. Would the members here recomend paying more for a newer model and avoiding the 05s?
ibr_adam09
Well they all have the Banjo bolt filter and that's the culprit most of the time. You probably hear the 05's more because they are getting higher mileage and that's when the filter is most likely getting clogged, starving the turbo. porterdog
Is it possible to change the BB Filter? Sure, either pull it and toss it or pull it, clean it, and put it back in.
ibr_adam09
Some people take it out, which itself to do is a PITA to do. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you do a 3k-4k oil change, you should be straight. Its very controversial though, the filter is there to be sure nothing goes into the bearing journal of the turbo, but if it does catch something big enough, it'll "roadblock" the oil passage. It's serving its purpose, but killing the turbo along with it. When people take the filter out, they may get debris to flow right though and destroy the turbo. Its a lose lose situation anyway you put it. Remember, the terrible stories you hear online will always bad. I think of it thisway, for every one story about a burnt turbo, there's atleast another 50 people running fine
Smackmatic
Im trying not to let the turbo thing worry me. The owner has his maintence records, and if everything looks good on the car Im going to buy it. I was looking for a 2.5i, but once I drove a GT.....
