Dual HVAC Double Din Kit: Completed Install Thread

ksnh

Recommended Posts

I like to be pretty nice before some other people get to you. Your SpecB among other limited LGT's have a dual zone HVAC system. Meaning your AC system is much more complicated than that of 2.5i's and other non limited outback vehicles. That double din kit you're looking at is for a single zone AC system. The only double din kit out there for our vehicle is the JDM kit, unless you're good with solder work and board cutting. It's nearly impossible to convert to single zone as well and I've never seen it done...hope this answers your question

Excellent, thank you for the info kind sir! I was reading through this thread and couldn't figure out why people were using a kit that seemed more complicated, but doing so to keep the dual zone makes sense and is the route I'd prefer.

Thanks!

edit: Well those are a lot pricier than I expected lol.

They are decently expensive, but way less expensive than taking that metro double din kit and purchasing all the components for the single zone. Here's a thread you may be interested in...

Although the overall install went fairly smooth, there was quite a bit of time taken out for details like cutting out the area behind the new hazard switch, as well as filing down the tabs on the A/C control board to make it fit. As I've seen in others pictures, for some reason, the entire stereo seems to be pushed very slightly to the right once everything is screwed down, but it's only noticeable when pointed out. Taking your time is the key here.

In all honesty, the work on the center console to cut the hole for the USB/AUX panel mount, and the hole through the center console cubby took almost as much time as the rest of the install combined. I didn't initially mount the mic, but my OCD kicked in and I tore out the A-pillar and got underneath to run the wire over to the head unit. Routing the mic wire up to the unit proved to be time consuming and rather tiresome if done correctly and safely.

Worth noting...it is extremely nice to be able to do all of the soldering of the 2 harnesses away from the car, as there were a bunch of them, especially when you throw in a bypass lockout as well as the i88 harness. However, taking your time and doing it right the first time saves you tons of frustration on the backside...as there is plenty else for your mind to be occupied with.

Don't sell the factory speakers short...once you get a nice head unit plugged up, they shine better than most factories do. I was gonna swap them out initially, but I don't think it'll be worth the trouble now.

Lastly, I would like to send a huge thanks to both SVXdc as well as dwolson2. I didn't even know a kit like this existed for our car, and even if I did, I wouldn't have ever tried it without such a thorough walk through. You guys are the best...thanks a million.

I read the first post about using only this kit. I was transferring all my audio stuff from my 96 Legacy to my 05 Beaner and have a single DIN head unit. I apologize in advance about breaking your rule of only using this kit. For others who want an option or just for shits/giggles, here is plan B. http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/2005%20Outback%20Stereo/P1020102_zpsm5vfkui7.jpg

Installed Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX in my 05 Legacy GT on Christmas.

Something I bought for myself :)

Stock speakers.

JDM double din AV panel.

JDM hazard button.

96svxdc harnesses.

GPS antenna stuck on top of the unit, under the dash. Reception seems fine.

For some reason I though the JDM hazard button = no cutting. Still ended up with a dremel inside the car though. Didn't screw up on the wiring harness so that's good.

I don't know if I can do any better with the gaps but I probably spent over an hour loosening screws and shifting brackets to try to make it fit better. Oh well.

I saw those small gaps at the bottom you zeroed in on in a couple photos. You could always order the JDM shift trim.

+ the color should match the new HVAC/HU trim.

Came out looking good.

Where did you source the USB port. I'd like to find one with USB-C port.

I picked it up at a local Car Toys. they have a few different flavors. I did have to dremel out some material from the console, but no biggie.

It's a bonus that the kenwood HU fast charges my galaxy s7 as well!

Details on how you painted it?

I made sure to separate the ashtray assembly from the shift console. You probably dont need to.. But it's cleaner for me.

I also removed the shift boot as well, since I was getting a new boot anyway.

Then hit everything with soap and water, and a scotchbrite pad to rough the surfaces up a bit.

Covered the chrome trim on the ashtray with some clear packing tape, then cut around it with an xacto. There's a tiny bit of bleed on it, but super hard to tell.

I used Valspar flat black, and flat topcoat rattle cans from Lowe's.

3 coats of black, then 3 coats of clear.

It sat around for a few days after, as well. I also made sure to wait a few hours between paint, and clear coat application.

I did it. took me months to get around to doing it. Finally, I'd had enough of the 4 CD's i own and started fabricating.

Nexus 7 WiFi

Timur's Kernel

JDM Double Din

Using a MiFi for internet.

It's not perfect and I still have gaps. i dont' know what magic you guys do to make it gapless, but I do remember I read something somewhere about filing down something. I'll poke around and find it this weekend when i actually have time.

I only installed it yesterday, but I like it a lot. The only thing it gets me besides the SWC is the gauges, and I'll pay the extra $40 over just the SWC module for the bling. I'm bone stock so I don't have an Accessport but it shows me the numbers that I dream of seeing from an AP.

With the Ford, you should get much better integration than on my Spec B.

My install thread is here, there are some more gauge shots and a couple crappy quality vids in it too.

I previously painted the shifter bezel with PlastiDip when I did my JDM HVAC in 2014. I was not 100% satisfied so I wrapped it instead in matte black vinyl over the weekend. Turned out pretty good IMO.

I have had mine installed since May. When I first installed it, I opted to wrap it in VVIVID Silver Brushed Aluminum Textured vinyl. The vinyl wrap turned out great, but was a bit tricky to get the corners and all just right.
