Need a new motor - Fitment question

Recommended Posts

As I was driving on the freeway this past weekend, i heard a loud noise from the engine, smoke came out and immediately pulled over. Turned off the car and when I tried to turn it back on, it wouldnt start. Towed to my mechanic who inspected for a while and determined that all my coolant had leaked, engine overheated (temp gauge was normal on the dashboard) and finally ceased.

About the car:

- 06 LGT ltd (5EAT)

- 135,000km

- currently stage 1 (Cobb OTS map)

- stock exhaust system

- K&N drop in filter.

- rebuilt VF40 turbo

My mechanic is currently looking for a used replacement motor. Question for you all, has anyone ever tried this kinda of JDM setup on an 05-09LGT :

Just basics, car would need a custom tune. If that has Dual AVCS it will not work with your car. Otherwise need to swap over intake/coil/injection parts. if its twin scroll (cant tell not sure about motor code) you will need headers and downpipe or custom exhaust work also

I would get a new OEM shortblock, a ej257 can be had for under $2000. a gasket set for your year car. Have your heads rebuilt, put it all together and drop it back in the car.

Why did your your car overheat ? did it loose all the coolant after something broke and punched a hole in the block ?

Are your heads ok ?

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

What Max said is probably your best bet. Going with crazy non-standard upgrades only leads to issues down the road in both time and money. I wouldn't suggest it unless it is a project car you can just leave idle for weeks or months at a time.

Its pretty much everything he needs I would imagine. no? plus a tranny. But why go down to an ej20? I thought the ej255/7 were better in the long run, or overall just better.

It looks like it includes the trans, but he would need a rear diffy also.

UP is also missing

Then finding someone to actually wire it up and make everything work is a completely different story as well.

Lastly I bet Socialist Canada has some strict OBDII laws so it won't have that either...

Yea, I agree, not worth all that trouble and money. You can get a shortblock and rebuild/machine the heads or maybe a complete ej255/7 for less. Plus I just prefer the 2.5 over the 2.0, more tuning room on stock internals and more torque. I think going to an ej20 would be a downgrade.

After talking to my mechanic this week, it appears that I require the shortblock and heads replaced. I have not received a definite answer as to the source of the coolant leak, the reservoir was pretty much empty.

I'm going to save for a low mileage used shortblock and heads and do the timing belt service at the same time. My mechanic also advised against using the JDM and USDM (STI) as I would have to replace a whole of other things. A replacement LGT motor is the simplest swap route for me and my wallet.

You are correct about the OBDII laws, I also found out that the JDM in the link I posted would not pass emission as the province where I live now uses OBD Computerized Emmissions Testing Equipment as of Jan 1, 2013.

Being a newbie who has never had a motor swap done, I was just trying to see if I can save some money by going to with a different motor/tranny setup.

After reading the responses and talking to my mechanic about it, I found out I was wrong and would end up paying more at the end of the swap.

I'm not sure you need the heads replaced. May be he meant rebuilt, that would be normal.

FInding these engines in a junk yard for little money is hard to do.

We get EJ257's for under $2000US. See if Fredbeans, a vendor here can ship one to you.

Here's my thread, lots of good info there.

Wouldnt start or wouldnt turn over???? Do you have the notorious "er xx" in your odometer? I think we should backtrack some, did you actually look at the motor and see that it was destroyed? I blew out bolt in my uppipe bung and the hot gas destroyed my maf wires and it wouldnt start. There can be other reasons its not starting. I thought the car ecu had a safety and will not let the car start unless certain parameters are inline like coolant, suprised it didnt cut itself off earlier. I had to bring my car to a subaru dealership for them to reset something in order for it to start again. I would do a double check. I'm probably wrong , but I'd rather be sure than guess.
