5MT Transmission Failure(s)

Not sure if anyone is even reading this anymore, but here goes. I thought I'd lost 4th gear (of all gears). The synchro seemed shot, and I had to rev match to get it in to 4th (up and down). Then I burned up my ACT Street clutch. So, I put in an ACT 6 puck, sprung-hub, and thought I'd drive it till the tranny gave up for good. After the clutch install, 4th gear seems to have fixed itself. I know that can't be true, and that perhaps the first ACT was not totally disengaging or something. But 4th was still a problem as that clutch wore to nothing. Anyway, I expect the problem will reappear, but it's been almost 8,000 miles on the new clutch, and I have zero problems. I did change the tranny fluid when I put in the clutch, but the car only had 28K on it, so I doubt the fluid was so messed up that it effected the synchros. But maybe?

I assume you mean center differential transfer drive and driven gears? This is associated with a whine at 35-40+ mph and some weird whirring sounds when at low speed. The differential itself is typically not damaged.

It's $133 in parts from Heuberger. Repair is a two day operation since you have to wait for fujibond to cure.

nasioc has a thread here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2071286. Part numbers in that thread are correct for the LGT (the parts system will supersede them properly)

I did my own and saved $600+ even with buying a shop press and bearing puller/separator. It is definitely a DIY job.

The bearings that go bad have been through one or two revisions in part number since originally made, so they might last a lot longer.

Mine were bad at 74k (from understanding that the noise wasn't actually normal , I also bought the car like that). I replaced at 103k when it started getting louder.

Does anyone know of a good independent mechanic in northern Virginia? I need tranny work and the lovely dealership quoted between $4600-$7000!!! Sounds like I need a whole new shebang. Just bought the car 2 weeks ago. SWEET right?!!

Any help would be appreciated.

i guess i'll just ride out mine till it dies. my transmission just endured a bad launch, so i'm expecting the worst

I can tell you in 3 seconds if you have the center diff bearing issue. I think I'm the MD expert now as well .

In all honesty I could probably tell over the phone.

well i lost every gear except 2nd about 3 weeks ago...:(

just been starting her every once in a while and saving for the next project...

still torn between the 6spd swap and just throwing in another 5spd...(which would allow me to slowly rebuild mine if i so chose..)

While my 5mt shifts into second just fine, my tranny is definitely not happy in second gear unless I'm accelerating. Any coasting in second produces a sound a few notches below a grinding noise, and the car gets acts like it wants to lurch/stall. That said, it holds in second just fine, performs under acceleration just fine, produces no smells, etc. The noise has me wondering how long I have before something goes, and whether or not I need to get it into a tranny specialist sooner rather than later. Any thoughts?

And yes, I've tried the search function:).

^^i've ridden in 5spd fxt that was launched/raced frequently and had thr same behvior. transmission broke completely after more track time. a piece of the syncro was destroyed, probably related to a bent shift fork from abuse. I wouldnt wait for the whole thing to grenade/cause other damage etc especially if it's a DD

quick question.

I found a sweet deal on an 07 wrx transmission with only 30k on it.

my synchros are messing up in 4th in 5th on my current tranny in the 05lgt.

now, can i swap that tranny (07 wrx) into my lgt?

I've searched and searched..

75 pages in the tranny section and no key words point me in the right direction.

I'm likely picking up an 05 LGT unlimited this weekend. Single owner, 91k miles, had all the major dealer services, including the 90k mile service with new turbo. The seller said his wife mostly drives the car (true or not, who knows) so it hopefully hasn't been beaten on.

It's all stock, and I plan on stage 2 power. UP/Catted DP, possibly upgraded TMIC, and probably have the tuning done by IAG Performance. Clutch hasn't been done yet, so it would probably be coming due for replacement soon anyway.

Is there any way to test 5th gear? It sounds like these are all sudden failures without any warning noises, so I'm guessing the answer's no.

When/if 5th gear does go, is it safe to limp home or to the shop in 1st-4th? Or should one just pull over and get towed?

Edit - And before anybody makes jokes about "to ensure max transmission life, don't drive your car," I'm aware that buying a high mileage turbocharged Subaru can open a can of worms, but I've really taken a liking to these cars (especially after 8 years of driving my underpowered 2.5RS), and am willing to pay to play.

Hope you haven't done this yet. The 07 WRX 5spd has weaker gears than the LGTs. You definitely DO NOT WANT that trans.

There's hardly any 5mt trans failures reported. If your car is and was always stock, I'd have pretty good faith that the trans itself is fine. It'll hold stg 2 power no problem as long as you can drive.

Now if you bang shift gears all the time...well that's a different story.
