maniaxzero
My blower motor fan was making a very loud noise so I decided to replace it. Bought a used oem fan from ebay for less than $40 shipped Time: Less than 15 min. Tools: 8mm socket wrench Clip puller(makes life much easier) or flathead screwdriver Remove 3 plastic clips under glove box http://i.imgur.com/keSGCl.jpg Trim and Clips puller set from harbor freight cost me 5.99 on sale. Makes life so much easier http://i.imgur.com/BvXa3l.jpg The Panel Comes off http://i.imgur.com/pBbbAl.jpg Unclip the electrical connector going to the blower. Use socket wrench to remove 3 8mm bolts on the blower itself. One is recessed but you shouldnt have trouble finding it by feeling. The blower fan unit comes out. http://i.imgur.com/jhRsql.jpg Left: Old Right: Replacement http://i.imgur.com/gPEX8l.jpg Left: Replacement Right: Old http://i.imgur.com/reGbSl.jpg [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVkEeZEG5Sg]2005 Legacy GT Old Blower Motor - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoytS-C5Izg]2005 Legacy GT New Replacement Blower Motor - YouTube[/ame] Overall, I'm very happy at how it turned out. Not really sure why the old blower motor malfunctioned so fast but it was a quick and easy job. The dealer wanted to charge me $300 to do it. lol Anyone wanna buy my old blower motor? it makes a nice turbo like sound when operating! ;]
floater163
Thanks for the post I followed this including the tools from Harbor Freight and it was an easy job. I am not sure where you found the fan on ebay for that price since all I found was Baja parts for a 2005 but I am happy that the sound is gone. floater163
I bought the part at the dealer and did not go with the Baja motor. I could not tell if it was compatible and according to the ebay page it was not.

floater163
I think it was about $179. If you need the part number I can go dig it out but just call the dealer and ensure it is in stock. They know it is the blower motor under the passenger glove box. I took mine out and drove there to make sure it was the right part. I called two dealers and the price was the same as expected. floater163
OK if you find it elsewhere please post it. I could not take the noise anymore and gladly paid the inflated price. Good luck.

muajg
My blower motor went out as well on my 2005 (79k miles at the time) . I used a blower motor from an Outback and it went in fine, $80.

SSlick406
$45 was the used price. I'd give you a link but it was through ebay. Use the search and you'll easily find one. Here's another video comparison for kicks... Bad blower motor. Thing was LOUD! Good used (new to me.) Nice and quiet
_karu_
Great DIY. I will definitely follow this trough to open and clean my blower motor. It's not making loud noises, but rather, it's making this whining sound at the lowest fan speed level. The whining noise is like Star Trek TNG's turbo lift. Have you guys heard that noise before? When I turn off the AC, it sounded just like when the turbo lift stops.
xt2005bonbon
I wonder if those fans operate like cpu fans. IOW, might need to lubricate a bit the bearings. Question is how to access them..

That's what I'm wondering too. My blower sounded like my old Dell PC's fan. It's....very annoying. Setting it on 1 level higher changes the frequency and it becomes more acceptable to my ear. The least thing I would do is to clean the blower fans and blast the motor with canned air, just like I would with the PC fan. However, I'm not sure that it's going to fix it. _karu_
Assuming it has bearings and they are accessible, I'd say lubricating them might work IF caught early. Yup! The thing is, for me, it's not that the blower is making loud noise. It's making a low pitch, subtle, whirring noise that really bugs me out. ugh! Good thing is, parts is readily available on eBay. If I can't get it fixed, I'll definitely replacing it. Otherwise, it would drives me nuts every time I stop at the red light! lol I'm going to replace the cabin air filter too. Who knows how long since it has been replaced by the previous owner. My house's HVAC's noise also went away when I replaced the filter not too long ago. It really "breathes" better now. _karu_
So, I took it out last weekend and at the same time, "replaced" the air filter. I put that in quotes since there was no air filter to begin with. doh! The blower was not in good condition. Perhaps due to missing air filter, it got really gunked up with dirt. I tried cleaning the fans and blow pressurized air into the motor, but, it did not make the noise go away. So, I ordered a new one online from eBay. $50 shipped. I will post an update when I got it installed. Hopefully it's going to be better.

_karu_
Got the new blower motor today! I made sound recording of the old blower motor just so that I have a reference to compare with the new blower. WOW! What a difference! The old blower motor's noise was driving me insane with its low pitch whirring noise. The new blower sounds like a normal AC blower! LOL. Here's a video I made to highlight the difference: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeMyODYupbQ]2005 Subaru Legacy - Blower Motor Noise (Old and New) - YouTube[/ame]
