$20 DIY Open Induction Cover

Recommended Posts

Hey All. Here's a neat little project we did over the weekend on Abandonhope16's LGT.

It's a DIY Open Induction Cover similar to the one maufactured by Blitz (see reviews section) but made for under $20  .

It dramatically increased the BOV sound and gives a nice subtle "breathing" sound upon throttle.

Its sort-of like a refined and functional "Hog-zaust" for your intake.

So if your feeling adventurous and the silencer removal doesn't quite do it for you, the instructions are imbedded in the photos and feel free to query..............ENJOY!

EDIT: The sandpaper if for roughing up the aluminum surface to prep for the epoxy (oops forgot to include that).

Wow nice work. What does the Blitz cover retail for? And what brand Filter are you using there? K/N ?

Thanks :).

Not sure but, I believe the Blitz goes for about $125-$150 minimum.

The filter is an AVO (I think, made it for my brother's car so I'm not 100%)

^^^Thanks. :)

We are considering some kind of duct-type work that would bring air in from the "drug smuggling" area below the filter (where the CIAs go). A heat shield would be included (just gotta find the time).

BTW I love your screen name and avatar.................."Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

One of the best movies of all time!!!

Nice job, but I have a question. (I was the kid in the back row at school everyone wanted to kick because I always had a question, LOL)

The slots at the top for the AB clips; Do they allow unfiltered air past the element? Also, if you bolting the assembly in place, could you do without the clips?

BTW, I have an idea to get some cold air over there if your interested.

Me Too!

The filter has a complete seal to the housing and is held in place by the pressure of the face plate (alum and ABS) via the clips and bottom bracket. Everything forward of where the filter meets (seals to) the housing is completely filtered (essentially we have a stock config. from the filter back).

Also, if you bolting the assembly in place, could you do without the clips?

No, the clips are a critical part of holding the cover onto the housing. Without them the only point that would truely be attaching it would be the bottom bracket. The engine is on rubber mounts that allow it to tilt slightly upon throttle, so the cover would seperate from the housing easily under those conditions (the piping to the engine is not fixed either, it has give in all directions that act as a "suspension" for the filter assembly).

BTW, I have an idea to get some cold air over there if your interested.

I'm always interested in a good brainstorm, hook it up. :)

Nice job.

If you check about half way down the walkthrough, you'll see pictures of the snorkel in place (which is how the setup actually is, the final pics were just to show the comparison to the Blitz pics). We are planning a "1/2 duct" that goes from the snorkel to the cover, but only on the engine (right) side and top. This would get us air from the factory snorkel and the "smuggler's bin" area, while isolating from the majority of the engine compartment (we're also trying not to alter factory parts). Something similar to what you have done but actually connecting the snorkel to the baffling you made.

Questions:

You have the modified snorkel but it appears that the CIA is sealed to the "smuggler's bin" and the snorkel isn't contributing to the air flow into the filter, is this to cool the piping?

What was the material of construction for your baffling?

You should prefab these, with a heat shield, and sell them for $75. I'd but one.

I'm sure I have enough supplies left over to make you one. :)

It would have to wait a while though, I'm preparing to defend my ChE Thesis and free time is a scarce commodity these days.

We could do it sooner with just the OIC, but the heat sheild will need development hours that I just don't have right now. :(

If you (or anyone else) is interested, let me know and we'll work something out.

If you look close, I sealed or enclosed the element inside the smuggler bin, isolating it from engine compartment air. The snorkel has a tube that forces cold air in right at the base of the AF element. So it is basicly pumping cold air into the smugler chamber, directly beneath where the airflow goes into the intake.

Ooohh, I see it now.....Bad a$$ dude. Yeah, that is basically what we are going for. Very nice work.

What did you use to construct the baffling that seperates the two chambers? (I was thinking about insulating some ABS, thoughts?)

I did the same thing, but more ghetto. I removed the front half of the box and simply screwed the K&N filter to the back half of the box and but the air induction piece back on to the front clip. It's been working great for 10000 miles now, and it only took me about 15 minutes to do. I do like what you've done though. It looks way way nicer than my setup.

Okay, I know this thread has been dead for a long time, but I've got to let you all know how it went down for me.

I tried this today, and to say the least, it's tough. CSTMIZR isn't lying when he said that the 45 degree angles had to be PERFECT. I couldn't get anything to line up well. However, I eventually pounded every corner into place and got it on, and it does make the turbo 'woosh' really awesome sounding.

If you can happen upon a used oem airbox f/s (even just the front half), it's the easiest way to go (just dremel) -- can be very inexpensive, too. I originally had to do this out of necessity (fmic installed & no tune for my avo sri), but my ears found it asthetically preferable to the sri, looked okay, and my setup didn't need that much air, so I kept it. I did a little resewing of an injen hydroshield for a prefilter. Have been using this for >10k, tuner-friendly, works great.

I did it similar to CSTMIZR, but I used a clear polycarbonate instead of an ABS and I ended up putting it on the inside. Hindsight I could have left it out completely if I had used corner braces on all 4 inside corners. I like the look of the steel mesh, so I used that as well. I also used the leftover polycarbonate (lexan or duraplex or something like that from HD) as a heat shield which works incredibly well. There is a huge temp difference on the intake side. I also made an Intercooler screen with the same style of frame. I have a walk-through of how I did that here:

I took your idea and ran with it . I have a 1990 bf wagon

.so I took an old airbox and cut the bottom off it at a point that

Would still hold the waterproof filter so it looks stock as the

Orignal to all members of the police force but works like a charm

.ow yeah and a 2.5in straight through with a 4 in cannon

Hides the sound . Got to be quick . Thanks all you guys out
