Turbo blew after 18 months and 13k miles.

My turbo blew, and it only has 13k miles on it after being replaced in January of 2011. It was replaced at a Subaru dealership prior to me buying the car, so do you think it will be covered?

Have you modded the car after the new turbo was installed? If it was modded the dealership might not cover it though.

Clearly there is a more pressing issue. I doubt the turbo is the failure point. Look at your banjo bolt filter.

 

And don't drive it. Make sure it is towed.

Also if it blew with so little miles, have them check your banjo bolts. Could be that they're clogged. If you don't check them and they replace it, the new turbo is just gonna go out on you.

I checked the service records from the previous owner, and it said the bolts were replaced, so it could be that the new ones are clogged. "Turbo oil delivery pipe/gaskets R&R," "Tech replaced bajo bolts with new pickup P screens for turbo supply and returns," and "Turbo Charger assembly/mount bracket R&R"

 

Don't worry, I shut the engine off immediately once I realized it was the turbo and towed it 3 hours back to my house.

 

I haven't modded it at all, so my main concern is if it will be covered, and how to go about getting it repaired under warranty.

If everything was replaced then the dealership should replace it. I'm guessing the new bolts are also blocked because thats way to soon for a Turbo to go out. My current VF-40 has 100,000 miles and it's still running strong. There def something besides the Turbo wrong.

I just talked to the dealership that replaced it, and they said the warranty is up to a year. I can't believe it is that short, and it makes me a little angry that they won't cover it. I would have thought that a new part would be guaranteed to work for more than that.

That's bull, you need to get serious with them. Turbod only fail either because of poor maintenance or factory defect. If you didn't have poor maintenance then they need to cover it!

Call SOA. If all else fails, go stage 3 with a BNR rebuild. You could do a 16g on stock fuel (with a pump upgrade).

I've called my local dealership, the Vermont dealership where the turbo was replaced, and SOA, and they all say they can't do anything because it has been more than a year.

Although SOA said they may give some "goodwill assistance," I doubt it will be enough to make it worth while to bring back to a dealer instead of doing it myself.

12mo/12k miles whichever comes first is the standard warranty for all parts at a dealership.
