Resurrecting a 2005 GT Limited

Recommended Posts

So I picked up a 2005 Legacy GT that doesn't run right for a song, and now my plan is to return her to her former glory! I have searched the forums quite a bit and have formulated some semblance of a plan. I thought I would also track my progress on here, for fun, and hopefully get some suggestions along the way.

So in summary the problems are:

Car does not idle well, sometimes stalls out, throwing a cyl 2 misfire CEL. This is by far the most pressing issue and likely the focus of all my efforts. Based on a few nights of research I have decided the potential failures are:

Intake manifold gaskets

Injector

Bent Valve

Burnt Valve

Damaged piston/cyliner

AVCS solenoid

Much less important, I am also going to tackle:

exhaust leak, Popped seam on drivers seat, moonroof stuck on one side, grille broken.

Picture of the beaut:

Finally was able to put the car in the garage, couldn't drive on the concrete until today due to the floor being freshly poured. (Long story)

Waiting on a few more parts and tools before I start, but this is where she will live for a while!

Finally got to work on the car, so the first thing was a compression test. Upon removing the plugs I noticed cyl 2 smelled strongly of gas. Compression test was done with jumper cables to a battery on the floor, so the crank was a tiny bit weak. And the engine was cold. Results are:

Cyl 2 45psi

Cyl 4 90psi

Cyl 1 95psi

Cyl 3 90psi

So gas smell with low compression say valve problem to me. I guess the engine comes out this week.

Why do you say that?

A cracked piston or worn out piston rings is more common with this model year than burnt valves.

You don't have to take off the exhaust manifold when pulling the motor. You should pull the front O2 sensor off before pulling the motor to prevent damage to it.

Read my click here link...

Leave the manifolds on until the engine is on the stand.

Take the fuel lines off at the shock tower.

Leave the motor mounts on the engine too.

Neat little trick I found on YouTube to hold everything while you remove the crank and cam bolts

So is my intake cam of off a tooth? Things aren't lining up perfect

The fact you have the space and facilities and savvy to do the work is light years ahead of most of these threads :) Typically it's "I got a sweet deal.....not sure why it knocks" lineage. Did you do a leak down test? I guess at this point it doesnt matter given the psi reading.

Seem like you wont have an issue with the project I aspire to your level of garage-dom :)

It's an exhaust valve

That video was taken with the cams out, with the cam installed there was zero clearance between the bucket and the lobe.

I retract my earlier statement, you are one of the few with a bad valve seat.

Did you inspect the cylinders and pistons for wear or cracked ringlands? How do they look?

Wow, high praise, thanks! Google and patience is key, lol.

Edit: to answer your question I didn't do leak down as I don't have an air compressor...

Cylinders look good, Pistons look good for what I can see. I am not going to split the block as there are no signs of a problem .

Answer to your question in post 16, yes.

I saw that too, with the alignment of the cams being off. Then again, his crank gear was not in the proper position to determine exactly if the cams were off or not.

There could be a possibility that the belt jumped a tooth if the crank gear was aligned.
