Hella Supertone Install Walk Through w/ pics

1) Remove intake, grill, unplug factory horns

http://www.jreednet.com/cars/lgt/hornwalkthrough/2.JPG

Here are your stock horns (located in front of the passanger side front tire, below the air intake infront of the resonator), on the right is the unit that makes the chip sounds for the remote entry. I chose to unplug the horns and use some metal pieces to slide into the plug and connect to the relay via some wire. You can also leave them plugged in and splice into the wire.

2) mount horns

I removed this little holder for the hood release cable to mount the drivers side horn, the passangers side should be empty (this hole is for right hand drive cars). I then places some misc bolts and nuts and washers in their place to mount the horns. No contact with the grill or radiator happens when the mounting bracket touches the cross beam flush.

3) mount relay

No pic here, but down in the well where the horns are there is a ground nearby, towards the engine. I removed it, used the screw to mount the relay, and connected the relay's ground directly to it.

4) run cables

Follow this diagram and run the cables to the wheel well where we placed the relay. I ran cable over to the battery and the horns via the cross beam in front of the radiator. I ran in inside the beam alongside the hood release cable.

P.S. Don't steal my car. I didn't have time to blur my plates. :D

I just recieved my Supertones and will be wiring them up. Could someone tell me if the diagram above retain the stock horns? I would like to use all of them if I could.

BUMP - did this ever get fully written?

also... why is the relay needed? Can't I just tap into the 12v wire going to the stock horn?

Usually a relay is to use a low voltage / low current signal wire to mechanically switch 12vdc to something. But the stock horn has to get 12v somewhere right?

Let me know your thoughts. I will post my walkthrough when I am done.

I used them on the stock wiring for a year and no issues. A relay is helpful (more output possibly), but not necessary for just a pair. Running four...you will need one.

ok thanks. Well I am running 8 supertones. 4 in the grill, 1 in each front fender, and 2 behind the rear bumper WRX style :lol::lol: ...kidding

So it will be like playing old school twisted metal with the supersonic special weapon that makes all other cars around you bounce. damn I loved twisted metal... maybe I should pull the 'ol playstation out.

Here are a couple pics of my supertones. I used the hella relay and the diagram in post #3 to wire everything up. The relay is mounted in the left corner of the grille opening (you can see the blue wire connectors) using an existing threaded hole. The horns themselves I mounted using an existing hole in the cross support with a bolt and lock nut.

I, too, like how you have yours configured, suds! :)

That might just have convinced me to get an aftermarket grill, and to position a pair of Supertones to supplement my current aux-horn + stockers combo.

Good stuff, and thanks for sharing!

There is a hole in the vertical steel beam in front of the radiator. The hellas come with their own bracket, so I took a long bolt and lock washers and mounted them using that hole.
Remind me to hear these Thursday :icon_cool

You didnt remind me :lol::(
