Stage 1 NOOB Questions

I'm new to this board (old to nasioc/subarus) and I just bought my first turbo car. 2005 LGT Limited 5MT. I love it. I had an old Impreza to begin with and I loved that car too.

Anyway. Being limited on funds and the fact that I still need a safe/reliable daily driver, I was thinking of really only going to stage 1 or a variation of that level. My intentions were to have the car with UP/DP/AccessPort, then just ride enhancing upgrades to the interior and that type of stuff...

Power mods first, here are my questions:

1 - Is it recommended to do an UP or DP before one or the other? Since I'll have some time between installs, I didn't want to run a completely detuned/crippled car...so will JUST an Up pipe or DP be ok, which one is better to have by itself/first?

2 - With an UP and DP, will I NEED an accessport, or is it just nice to have? I'll be getting the car tuned after the UP/DP are installed, but will I need the AP as well? As I said above, I'll have some time between installs and will still need my car to function pretty well.

3 - Did some reading that the AVO, or any other aftermarket panel filters can lean out the car, and that Cobb no longer recommends them as part of the AP tunes. Are there custom tunes/maps that can be programmed into the AP?

I'm not sure how all these parts work together and how to tune/map everything w/ the AP. I've done a bunch of reading today, but any info or links help. Also I did some searching, but even with a day of searching, there are still 100's of threads to read.

Thanks!

Do both the DP and UP at the same time because the DP will have to come out to get access to the UP anyway.

If your trying to save money forget the Cobb access Port and go the open source route its free http://www.romraider.com/RomRaider/RomRaider and you can pick up a cable for like $15 off of ebay. Some people have problems with the cable and getting it to work as they are not actually for our cars, some get a tactrix cable instead http://www.tactrix.com/.

Infamous1 tunes are highly recommended if your not comfortable tuning your self. If you are romraider.com's forums have free base maps that can get you started and can tweak to your set up.
