JDM HID with Leveling Switch Walkthrough

Recommended Posts

Bumping this old thread. I just received pair of JDM HID lights and now need to figure out how to flip the shields and convert the wiring, both for main harnesss and levelling harness. This thread talks mainly about the leveling motor harness, any info on the main harness conenctors type? I'd like to do a clean install and fabricate harness for both sides.

JDM OEM HID converts, do you run your JDM harness straight from USDM headlight harness or do you use additional harness with separate relay? Comparing USDM and JDM wiring I see that both OEM are in fact relayed and should be a straight plug in with proper connectors. DRL is unplugged to I am not worried about that at this point.

I believe I found the pigtail connector. It is a toyota part...go figure. You also need the repair wires. I believe I found the correct pins if you want make your own for much less money.

Connector: Toyota 90980-10797

Repair Wires: Toyota 82998-12340

Pins: Sumitomo Conn-11-856 (ballenger motorsports)

I haven't tested it yet as I don't have my jdm lights or a leveling switch. This was found by searching over the past day.

I gambled on the connector and it's too large. Unfortunately it's still a no go. I've spent hours searching through toyota wiring pdfs as they actually give connectors and part numbers but nothing looks close enough. The newer brz/frs has hids and a leveling switch but the connector is different.

I found the actual manufacturer of the leveling switch connector in the dash and have the part number but I cannot find any source for the connector. I sent an email to the manufacturer to see about sourcing the connectors but I doubt I'll hear back.

I thought it was sumimoto and it is sealed connector. I spent a lot of time trying to identify main connector and zeroed in on Sumimoto. You can download their connector catalog online, but there are many different series of connectors, hard to find exact match based on pictures.

But main problem is that even if part number is known getting it is whole other story. some are available on alibaba from China, but most are bulk quantities, same as from single us source. Jim from Eastern beaver was most helpful but he doesn't have these connectors either.

My JDM hids came with connectors so I am all set. I believe our 07 Tribeca has same connector for headlights. try some junk yards in your area.

I'm talking about the switch for the leveling connector on the dash. The leveling motor does use the sumitomo sealed. I'll edit my post to be more clear.

My bad, I jumped to respond without going back in the thread. I believe but not 100 % certain that that connector is same type as door mirror connectors. It's been a while since I checked. but usdm legacies have 8 position connector on GT/OBXT (heated/adjustable and with turn signal), 6 on non turbo (no turn signal ).

JDM folding mirrors will have 12 pole connector. (I should check what I posted in folding mirrors thread).

If I get some time today I will try to verify what I just said, should have extra mirror and switch laying around.

That would be great. If you can, take a picture of the connector from the front. Thanks.

It is the same EXACT connector actually. USDM GT mirror connector is 8 pin and plugs right in dash HID leveling switch. I will upload pictures later today.

Awesome! I was researching wiring diagrams after you mentioned the mirror and saw the connector on the usdm heated/turn mirrors to be the same shape connector in the fsm. I was just getting ready to take apart my door panel to check, haha. Thanks for saving me from doing so!

Edit: This is also the same connector from a base model 2008-2010 Impreza/WRX with non-heated mirrors.

Glad this helps you, thanks for info on base Imprezas, should be easier to find connectors.

Here are the pics, in no particular order, but as you can see mirror connector is exactly the same and I tested plugging it in the actual leveling switch.

tldr - Im interested if anyone has done a proper pinout/breakdown of thejdm bl/p plugs at the leveler switch. Its hard to get an idea of how the pin positions in the plugs are suppose to get wired.

Viewed from rear/pin side, left to right I have-

pin 1- purple

pin 2- black/white

pin 3- blank

next row

pin 4- green/yellow

pin 5- green/red

pin 6- red/green

pin 7- black

pin 8- blank

From the scattered informative posts Ive read I understand 2 wires are for illumination, 2 wires are for ignition power and ground, and two are outputs to the 3 pin plugs on each headlight for signal (1 wire to each headlight)

So can anyone rattle off the information to make the approproate connection?

Btw I can confirm its is the same plug for the leveler switch as the oem usdm mirror plugs male side of course.

I know it’s an old thread and I did a search but it seems most people are to lazy to open up the housings, how many of you have done the shield flip as well as hooking up the switch leveler?

I've done the shield flip and am about to undertake the leveler.

I'm not very familiar with electrical so I need to ask: is it ok to splice the ignition power, ground, and parking lights into the remote mirror control harness? If so, do I just match the wires, i.e. purple to purple, black to black, green/yellow to green/yellow?

Thanks in advance.

That should be fine. how's the harness working out for you?

I'd like to buy one if you have any available ^ (this is leveling motor connector right?). The headlight harness is working great - I just did a track day on Monday 3.5 hours away in upstate New York. No flickering in either direction - thanks man.

Glad they are treating you well. I’m just waiting for a couple friends to install and let me know if I need to make adjustments. You already have the motor connector on your kit. This is from the switch in cab to the headlight.

In addition to the leveling motor AW4BYT will hopefully start selling soon, he also make a harness for the JDM high-beam/low-beam/turn signal (https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/jdm-usdm-headlight-harness-bl-bp-283236.html). That is what you need unless you want to do the wiring yourself. I would send him a PM to see if he can make more. I am very happy with mine. It's very high quality (heat shrink, abrasion resistant sleeving, Deutsch connectors, etc.), I couldn't have made something better myself.
