Tein Super Wagon Dampers

Hi all,

I am looking to get tein super wagon set of coilovers for legacy gt wagon.

Looks like they reasonably priced and have preload and heigh adjustements.

If anyone using them, please comment on they performance, quietness, ride quality and if you recommend them?! Do you get any road noise with them on?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated. (see link below for specs)

Cheers

Thanks Patagonian!

Did see the thread where the guy from Canada was selling a set.

However there was no comments in the thread from anyone who uses it!

I can buy a set here in Australia at a reasonable price, but super wagons are fairly low prices compared to say GT Wagon or Teins CS type. So I am little worried about they ride quality and handling characteristics!

What are you using on your car?

Cheers

Stock USDM, for now. Not many options besides springs or ZEALs. I'd like to get my hand's on a set of Spec B Bilstein's and Pink or Swift springs.

I was thinking about buying the Super Wagons from that guy, but Keefe made the point that the Tein's are not height adjustable. That's a deal breaker for me. GP Moto has released a set of coilovers for around $1600 US......supposedly better than the Tein's.

Keefe made a mistake.

Super Wagon coilovers are fully height adjustable (just see my link to them)

http://www.tein.co.jp/swgdampe.html !

extract from their site:

"Height & Damping Force Adjustable shock absorber x4, Main spring x4"

I wouldn't buy a set myself if they weren't height adjustable since I am planning on lowering the car once I get my new set of wheels (another 6 weeks to go)

I got the car 3 weeks ago and just running it in now! So far 1500kms on the clock.

All good (apart from my neighbour across the road backing into it yesterday while it was parked in my drive way and causing about 3k worth of damage to the lhs rear of the car! )

I got some Volk Racing wheels on order which should be here in about 6-8 weeks !

So do you think those super wagons worth buying?

or should I go for a more higher end version such as teins cs?

What I think that Keefe (Xenonk) was referring to was that the coilovers in question only had an adjustable spring perch. What you are actually adjusting is the preload on the spring, which had the side-effect of changing the ride height. Truly ride height adjustable coilovers such as the Zeals, Cusco Zero-2 and Tein Flex's (to name just three) have both an adjustable spring perch for preload adjustment and a fully threaded body into the mounts that allow the length of the assembly to be changed and thus change the ride height while keeping the preload constant.

I could have been reading up old stuff from Tein as well. I do know the Flexs have adjustable ride height AND spring preload. Normally a coilover with ride height seperate from spring preload DO NOT need a helper spring (it would defeat the purpose of having a helper spring when the spring perch is adjustable). I could have been wrong and mistaken/mixed up on the 2-way adjustment on the SUPER WAGON, GT WAGON, HYBRID WAGON and the regular TYPE WAGON coilovers.

It's not to hard to distinguish the difference between the spring-preload only adjustment vs. ride-height only adjustment coilovers. Ride height-only coilovers comes with helper springs, whereas the coilovers without helper springs are usually designed for pre-load setups.. there are instances where 1st generation coilovers (spring, sleeve and perch) were designed with the ride-height in mind, but typically it's only given for an effective range, if the car was dropped too low, the spring could mis-align under zero-load as the car goes air-born from a hop or jump. Shock stroke/suspension will play a roll to keep the spring on load.

Ok, I just looked up the CS model (which the website stated that it's ride height adjustable) but they dont include helper springs.. which is obviously designed for spring pre-loads, not to be mistaken with ride-height adjustment.. so it makes me worry what Tein has claimed on their website that could be misleading.

I would definitely double check the ACTUAL suspension to see if there are 2 different locking perches (which should be a total of either 3 or 4 adjustment perches which requires the spanner wrenches to lock them.. 1 is the spring perch seat, one for the spring perch seat lock, one for ride height perch, one ride height perch lock).

From their website, it looks like the Super Wagon uses 4 perchs, while the GT Wagon kit uses 3.. (so they should be ride height AND spring pre-load adjustable). The SUPER STREET, TYPE CS, and WAGON coilovers are actually spring-preload-only setups for their coilovers.

I personally turned away from the Tein stuff because I felt that the street-use lower-models were designed too soft for my use (unless I go with the racing model lineup, which I dont think they have a Legacy BL/BP application). Most of their lower models doesn't come with camber plates either.. kinda bummed me out when I can't get more/less camber during the year. I like to wear out my tires as evenly as possible throughout the year.

In the case of Tein, I know that they only tested two sets of coilovers on my car. One was their Type Basic coilovers, which are preload adjustable only and fixed dampening, with bushing tops. The other was their Type Flex coilovers. The Flex's are preload and height dual adjustable, 16 way dampening adjustable and also come with pillowballs and camber plates.

These two look to be the only two they will be offering as US spec models. I think they have some of their other product lines available in Japan, and while they should certainly fit, you would have to import them.

I see two adjustable perches total. Preload/height combined?

That is correct Patagonian GT.. Notice that there are only 2 locking perches. There is no 3rd lock perch for the ride height as what my Zeals have:

Notice the threading on the mounting point, and the 3 locking perches. A 2-way system needs at least 3 locking perches.
