Front Koni inserted (Using EDM Legacy 2.0R OEM front strut body. The spring perch is 3.5cm lower than ones on EDM Outback struts)

Currently stock Outback 3.0R springs are used, may change to STI pinks later...

Rear Koni for Legacy "converted", note the two new grooves to hold the spring seat.

The rear suspension is now 3 way height adjustable (no more saggy butt, currently the middle groove is being used)

I have the Konis on my 06 3.0R outback as well... Love them. Totally transform the car. Good work. Must have ordered mine just before they went with the adjustable rears.

My shop modified the Koni rear shocks so I could adjust the rear right height.

Koni does not make adjustable height version.

Nice. Why didn't you just put in BC coilovers. All the cool kids are doing that! Haaa. J/K, glad to see someone doing things right!

Actually my friend's Outback 3.0R rides on BC coilovers and he says it rides fine for him, but I personally prefer traditional struts if possible.

Do the koni fronts not use the same removable perch style as the rear?

For my sisters car, I wanted to build a set of coil overs based on konis so they actually have a quality shock and valve pack inside. I want her to be able to raise it up in the winter with some bilstein or race land threaded sleeves.

No, the front shock re-uses the lower portion of the stock strut.

but you can remove and re-weld the front perch to change the ride height in the front.

Oh ok. So they are cartridge style and slip inside the Oem housing. Hmm normally I don't like them but in this case, it would be the perfect opportunity to convert to a sleeve-over system.

Also on a USDM Outback the Koni inserts won't work on the OUTBACK front struts, you will need to find Legacy front strut housings to put them into.

So is the issue with Konis in USDM Outback struts just the length, or are they also different diameters?

It's the length. In the rear the konis replace the rear coilover shocks, so the rear would be LGT length. The issue on the fronts is that the inserts will not reach all the way down to the bottom of the housing to tighten it down. Even if you put something in there to make up that space, the perches would be in the wrong places so essentially the front would be real high, the rear would be real low.

That sucks. I was looking at the koni/epic walkthrough and was hoping I'd just be able to cut the stock outback strut shorter to compensate for the shorter koni legacy insert. I'm guessing that would mean we are compressing the spring too much to get in there (especially a stock outback spring)?

A new set of KYB's from rock auto is under $150 shipped to me. It just seems such a waste to cut up new struts.

Regarding modifying the rear Koni, would that be doable with the same pipe cutter? Just cutting a groove instead of all the way through?

You can't cut the fronts any "lower" because of the perch location. The springs aren't an issue as we've used obxt springs on konis/lgt struts before. On the rear konis the perch is set at lgt height so it simply wouldn't work.

The best route is to get lgt front donors and put the konis on. Just be forewarned that you will now be at lgt height not outback height.

We are going to be offering pre-assembled fronts this spring with new front KYB housings.

Interesting. Would you mind expanding on your thoughts between a set of konis with legacy or with outback springs? I am under the impression that outback springs are longer but are not progressive rate, so any extra compression into the legacy length struts would make no difference in spring rate?

Then there are all the comments I read about how it is springs that determine ride length, not struts. Combined with the fact that the picture of pachilla's outback looks higher than a legacy? Sorry for my car newbness.

On the older Outbacks it was the spring length that determined the height, however on the newer ones (MY 2000+) the strut perches combined with the springs give it the added height.

When we've installed OBXT springs on Konis the ride was definitely stiffer than with LGT springs in there but I couldn't tell you for sure as I don't have any hard data other than the butt dyno.

If you cut the rear konis and put some kind of ring in there to hold the perch and somehow were able to get the fronts into the OB housings you could retain the OEM height as the OP did, but I've never seen it done here in the US.
