planigan
Hey everyone, I'm in the process of re-building my amp rack. I have two JL amps, a CS, and two Diamond Audio HEX crossovers mounted on it. The rack itself is cut from a sheet of 1/4" thick HDPE plastic. http://www.patricklanigan.org/misc/amps/IMG_2321.jpg On the bottom I attached two lengths of 1" x 1" plastic to create risers, and to the bottom of the risers I attached a smaller square of 1/4" plastic. This creates a nice little space for running wires. http://www.patricklanigan.org/misc/amps/IMG_2322.jpg Here is a photo of the bottom after wiring everything up. http://www.patricklanigan.org/misc/amps/IMG_2325.jpg And this is the bottom with the cover on. http://www.patricklanigan.org/misc/amps/IMG_2327.jpg This is a shot of everything as it stands now. The hole in between the amps lines up with the hole in the bottom of the trunk that is used to bolt down the spare tire. I plan to replace the existing bolt with a longer one, to secure both the amp rack and the spare tire together. http://www.patricklanigan.org/misc/amps/IMG_2335.jpg I'll post some more pics when I get everything put back in the trunk. planigan
looks nice. where are you from and what is your street addy? I live at 480... waaaaait a minute! shit son, where are the /V2 series amps!?!? I bought all of this before the Slash V2 series came out, and got a really great deal on the amps. I've actually had it all installed for a while, and just now am getting around to rebuilding the rack. I had everything mounted on a scrap of 1" thick plywood, also sitting in the spare tire well, before. It was functional, but definitely not pretty
Zimm
That looks awesome, I think I may copy you One question though, how do you plan to support the trunk floor above? Or are you not planning on putting it back in? I was thinking if you put some upright walls around the amps you could provide enough support for the floor. Or are you not planning on putting it back in? I was thinking if you put some upright walls around the amps you could provide enough support for the floor. The trunk floor just kinda lays on top of it. There isn't much room between the insulation on the bottom of the trunk floor and the top of the amps, so it supports the trunk floor pretty well. I never really need to put anything back there that is heavy enough to crush the amps. My only concern with that arrangement is heat dissipation, but it was set up pretty much the same way with my old amp rack and I never had any thermal issues. Next step would be to build a new cover/floor with a slotted vent (similar to this -- which pretty much blows my install out of the water), and that might require the uprights. I doubt I'll ever actually get around to that though, as long as I don't have any problems with the current setup.

FishingFiend
McMaster-Carr. They've got all different kinds, shapes and sizes of plastic. Very cool, thanks for the link. Nice job on the amp rack! I agree, air circulation should be addressed. A couple of fans for intake/exhause and you should be good to go.
NSFW
Very clean! Where did you acquire the HDPE? If you find yourself on this side of the Cascades any time soon, you can buy it from TAP Plastics in Bellevue or Seattle. http://www.tapplastics.com/index.php
FishingFiend
Does the amp rack flex when lifted only on one side? Also, what did you use to cut the HDPE? I was going to use MDF for an amp rack, but I'm wondering about the weight savings.
planigan
There is a little bit of flex, but the small white block in the middle provides enough support to keep it from flexing too severely. I used a jigsaw with standard wood blades. The HDPE was actually very easy to work with, anything you would use to cut wood should work. I would definitely suggest using drill bits with starter tips though. Honestly, I think the weight savings are negligible. I like the plastic because it looks good, and I didn't want to be bothered with wrapping the MDF in vinyl or something like that.
