1996 Subaru Legacy ABS Pump Replacement

Recommended Posts

My ABS pump is leaking and requires replacement. Can anyone let me know what pumps are interchangeable between years/models ect. I will be getting a used one because a new pump is too much. I will be posting a walk-through during this. Is bleeding the system afterwords any different. Any special info on this process will be greatly appreciated. If anyone knows where I can get one on the cheap please let me know. It has id tag 26731aa200 110 000 30460. Here are photos of the one that's leaking.

for research i would look at 2 site for matching ABS units:

1) opposedforces.com/parts - follow the year, model, engine, trans, and parts, thread to the very end and then click on ''usage info''. it will list all the cars that used the part.

2) http://www.car-part.com - they will only return parts that are ''known'' to match.

this may be a one year part. the industry and the systems were changing almost every year. but there is a good chance that another year will work.

it is a pretty safe bet that the impreza of the same year will work. subaru is way too small to have a different part for different models in the same year.

i have one in VA from a 98 outback auto trans w/ 160k miles in good condition.

let me know if you are interested.

Working on cars for almost 15 years I don't think I've ever replaced a ABS unit on a Subaru. Heck I probably haven't replaced 5 wheel speed sensors in that time spand being a mechanic. But if your sure then I guess you just got the one out of a million that ended up leaking.

I possibly have the same leak. While it looks like it is coming from under the unit, it is leaking from a plug on the lower rightside. Fluid is seeping around the edge of the plug. I presume it is an o-ring but have yet to find how to access any port to see if the seal/o-ring can be replaced. I've been unable to find the name of the plug nor internal drawings. It is online with the pump motor and is probably one of the check-valves
