Heat Shield Overkill

My heat shield overkill that people seem interested in:

Works great. 100 degree ambient days, feel like I'm driving in 75 degree weather. Even on hot days, after an hour of driving, I can hop out, open the hood, and touch the heat shield.

I'm running:

TurboXS Catted Downpipe

DEI Titanium wrap (2", 1" overlap)

PTP Turbo Blanket (black, from Mike)

Thermotec clamp-on heat shield (4" x 12" IIRC)

Grimmspeed Heat Shield

Any questions, just ask.

Hows the intercooler feel after a WOT run? Heatsoak any less?

Much less. Even in the 100 degree days we've had, it drives like it's 70 out. Even in traffic.

What's on the bellmouth part of the downpipe?

What do you mean? Nothing is on the bellmouth. It is a cast bellmouth, though.

A lot of stainless steels have a yellowish tint to them... it's all the nickel.
Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

Bingo.

I'm really happy with this downpipe. Fitment was spot on, looks great, no smell, no CEL, and not much of a change in exhaust note. Plus, having the cat out of the engine bay really cut down on the underhood temps.

I got it from Summit, at the same time I got the DEI wrap.

No rattles, the shield is actually flexible (it's a fiberglass matting with a metalic shielding). Clamped in place, there are only soft parts to move.

No worries guys.

I wish I'd kept the heat shield from my old Legacy Turbo. Those had chimneys built in to direct air over the turbo.

All that heat shielding must have helped something. The car made surprisingly good power on the dyno yesterday!

Pics of what? The old style heat shield? I don't have any. I also don't have pics of it on the dyno. It did make 263whp and 337ft-lbs though.

No no, the dyno scan yesterday...

I just have one of the dirty ones. I didn't get the final chart.

 • 1 month later...

BAC - thanks! Have both a Cobb and a GS heat shield in the spares locker so will be installing one of those with the PTP Turbo Blanket. Thinking I'll go with the DEI Titanium in 2"x50' for the pre-turbo wraps and 2"x25' for the post-turbo DP wrap. Like you, my cat is well aft of the engine compartment, but would like to add some additional thermal containment in the inner CVJ area.

Read that you can use the DEI Silicone Coating directly on exhaust parts and on any "wrap" material as well. Wonder what additional efficacy would be gained by spraying down the exhaust parts first, letting them dry, then wrapping/tying-off the wrap, and finally sealing the outside of the wrap with the silicone coating?

Thoughts?

I'd leave the Ti wrap unpainted.

Swapped my DP a bunch of times a few weeks ago. It was hot enough after 20 minutes, the turbo was still hot enough to melt through a Mechanix glove!

Why do you recommend leaving the wrap unpainted?

And this was on your wrapped DP?

OAN - Understand the benefit of keeping turbo radiant heat away from the TMIC and/or FMIC piping, IM, cylinder head, electrical connections, and firewall, but question the wisdom of keeping that same heat tightly concentrated around the turbo, i.e. inside turbo blanket, within shielding, which limits its ability to self-cool (read: shed heat as readily from the castings and other metals). Seems like there's a trade-off to this.

I simply see no benefit to painting it.

No real trade offs. As long as the turbo is warm, coolant will still flow to cool it. It'll take longer to cool down, but the benefit is keeping heat in the turbo and out of the engine bay. Keeping heat in the turbo helps improve spool. The added load, as has been shown, hasn't been anything the cooling system cant handle.
