cost of replacement keys

Recommended Posts

I just bought a new fob and key a couple of weeks ago.

The fob was $58.23 and I programmed it myself (youtube it; it's not too difficult).

The key was a non-chipped, non-immobilizer key that cost me $10.48. Got it cut for free at Home Depot. Not sure how much the dealership would have charged. The immobilizer didn't come standard in the 05 2.5i but it may have been standard for the GT so you'll have to research that. A chipped key will be more (significantly).

Fob part # is 88036XA010.

The non-chipped key is 57497AG10A.

uncut key with transponder $40

fob $78

im looking up locksmiths in my area and what they'll charge ti cut and program the key.

which dealership did u go with?

I got mine from Pence Subaru in Richmond, VA. I'm local so I can order and pick up in 1-2 days, usually.

Shipping may add to the costs for you, though.

Here's the link for the key fob: http://parts.pencesubaru.com/productSearch.aspx?searchTerm=88036XA010

Here's the link for the immobilizer key blank ($31.55):

Here's the link for the non-immobilizer key blank ($10):

(Disregard the picture, the non-immobilizer key actually looks just like the regular key not that generic key they show.)

Shipping the chip key + fob to Cali (figured the longest distance) was only $14 for a total of $103. Fob would be a free program (DIY, youtube) and then however much it would cost to have your chip key programmed into the system.

I went to the dealer to get a Subaru key, they cut it then told me I had to make apt to program and the cost was $150. I laughed and called a locksmith, this was a fraction of the cost with no apt. He screwed around with the car for a while with his computer. Eventually after the right combo of opening and closing the door multiple times, honking horn, using flashers, ect. He got it to work.Does anyone know what the exact combo is, and can you perform this without the "special" computer hooked up to the car?

Hey guys.

I just had to replace my fob. I ordered a new, uncut key for the 09 Legacy (Key and Fob in one). It was $60 on amazon. I then followed CovertRussian's directions here

http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4737821&postcount=9

After the fob was programmed, I took it to my local hardware store to cut the key. Make sure the blank slides in and out of your ignition easily.

That was it, easy enough

Whoops! Just actually read that you dont have the old key. CovertRussian's method uses the already programmed tranponder from your car. I will also say that when I did this, it rendered my other fobs useless...

So to clarify... I can buy a blank key with transponder chip and key fob in one and program both using this method? Or is the transponder programming different than fob?

You can program the FOB on your own. The procedure is in your owners manual. However, in order to program the immobilizer in the key, you need to go to a locksmith or the dealer.
