It is the segment leader for cars that use all four wheels to navigate inclement weather and rough terrain. All-wheel drive allows each wheel to get power from the engine at the same time, a feature associated with SUVs and other light trucks. All-wheel drive is standard on all Subarus. "This is their niche," says Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis at the Power Information Network, a unit of J.D. Power. More than 90% of cars sold last year were either front- or rear-wheel drive, mainly since car makers don't typically offer the feature due to added cost and weight. But "[all-wheel drive] is gaining in popularity. There's a general interest by the consumer about safety and it's perceived as being a safety feature." But the Japanese auto maker is facing increased competition in the all-wheel-drive sedan market. Among the rivals, Volvo's S40 T5 and Nissan's Infiniti G35X are sold with all-wheel drive as standard. The S40 is Volvo's small premium sedan and it comes in two models: 2.4i and T5. The T5 with standard all-wheel drive has a six-speed manual transmission.
