Elegua's Badass BR9 Wagon

Recommended Posts

It worked. 70mm to a 76mm straight-through can. The valve's default position is open and is held closed by vacuum until 0.8bar.

Much better transient response, WGDC ramping back to normal, and overall flow is up. Sound is very quiet with valve closed, reasonable with valve open.

Now, more boost? Maybe not.

Changed exhaust strategies. 0.8 bar was still too high a threshold.

With a bit of guidance from farh_side I got a Hobbes switch to activate the exhaust solenoid to open the leg at about 4psi - just high enough to get me up a hill in cruise without the leg opening, but low enough to open the leg before the 64mm gets backed up.

We replaced the stock intake with a Blitz suction kit and box. My one piece of JDM bling. The suction noise is quite noticeable as you get into boost.

Added a catch can - getting about 50-70ml in the can every couple of thousand km.

I almost forgot to mention that we installed STi valve springs since we had some sitting around. In hindsight this was a very good thing to do since at WOT the engine will shift at 7.1k - flappy paddles won't force the transmission to shift earlier.

Subscribed to this one. What a sweet wagon!

Not sure how I overlooked this thread before but thanks to fahr_side for directing me here.

Not really sure how I never paid much attention either. Must be the non descript threat title.

Elegua, bravo! on the build, nice car!

Haha. And here I was thinking you guys just weren't that impressed ;)

I think Elegua is a bit busy this week so I'll update his powertrain build list for the curious, since a few things deviated from the original plan in his first post.

- Manley 99.75mm pistons

- Heads cc'd and chamber matched

- Siruda 1.00mm multi-layer steel head gaskets (final CR 8.4:1)

- GRB STi exhaust cams

- GRB STi valve springs

- ACL rod and main bearings, fitted at larger than stock clearances

- ARP 260-4701 head studs

- NGK one-step colder spark plugs

- Gates timing belt, pulley and tensioner kit

- New OEM water pump

- Alloy radiator

- OEM washer tank cut and plastic welded to clear radiator

- Hardrace engine mounts

- Custom stainless 4-1 EL header with v-bands, wrapped

- Borg Warner EFR7163 turbo with V-band 0.85 A/R housing

- Turbosmart 45 external wastegate (nothing physically larger could be fitted)

- Custom FMIC kit built around OEM BMW 335i core

- Blitz 'carbon suction kit' intake

- Custom piping and couplers to adapt intake to BW turbo

- Custom CNC adapter parts to match OEM Subaru turbo drain pan to BW turbo

- Custom SS exhaust with V-band connection, 200-cell cat, 70mm through to one straight-thru 76mm can via a cutout and one 63mm turbo-style can open at all times

- Exhaust cutout operated by vacuum supplied from brake booster and controlled electrically via Hobbes switch set at 4psi boost.

- Omni Power 3bar MAP sensor MAP-SUP-3BR

- Pierburg 3-port BCS (VAG OEM part)

- DW300 fuel pump

- DW750 Bosch EV14 fuel injectors

- Remote oil filter kit

- Oil and transmission fluid coolers in original TMIC location

- Custom alloy catch can

- Snow Performance methanol injection kit, additional control solenoid valve and #5 nozzle

- Custom alloy water/meth tank with internal baffles in spare tire well

Supporting chassis mods are all there from OP's first post.

Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

Can I change the title of the thread to be a little less vague? Suggestions?

I'll ask Elegua to think of something more enticing. ;)

I highly recommend the Project Mu Brake Pads. Quiet, relatively low dust and I haven't been able to melt them.

One thing I haven't found a good solution for are the lower a-arm bushings - this is the second set I've ripped in 60k km - and both were hardened.

I believe you want this?

KCA406 Front Control Arm Inner Rear Bushing and Positive Caster kit. I had it on my Legacy. Looks like it may be hard to find.

By hardened I assume aftermarket. Who made them? Just so the rest of us will know to stay away from them.
