If it's so much nicer than the EJ motor why not swap this thing in next time around? Wonder how much work it would really involve. Already did a regular EJ swap, that wasn't horrible.

neat idea, so much to like about that engine.

even if it just drops in, as far as I can tell, the FA20 DIT only comes with CVT in japan, so your probably looking at long-block, all accessories (alternator, PS, AC), ecu/harness swap, tranny + install. holy $$$$.

The engine itself is mated with either a CVT or a MT.

The best bet would be to get complete transmission and wiring from a newer Forester with that engine. But it will be expensive.

I'm in no rush, I only have about 20K on my current build but when these drivetrains become more available from wrecked foresters and the new impreza wrx I would love to jump on that project. see how many decades I can keep this 4th gen alive, its just too beautiful to part with...that is unless the new Legacy GT blows me away that much, I'm keeping my hopes up.

^^ do explain knowledgeable one. maybe it wont mate to an older tranny like ours (but i sure would like confirmation on that) but once parts become more available from a possible MT forester or the likes...nothings impossible with $$.

i hope u guys know i put a buick v6 in a legacy bolted to the subaru tranny .. so at worst you may need an adapter plate or two ..

as for ecu stuff , if the crank and cam triggers are the same it could be simply wired in and tuned.

if the cam signal is different you could get away with a 2.5i ecu but not have the avcs functioning.

or use megasquirt for real time tuning and there is a circuit board that will spoof the crank and cam signals to make the stock ecm happy to allow all the gauge cluster cruise control and a/c to function as stock.

Now that's thinking out of the boxer!

fyi all 05 + legacy's have built in code reader

I did follow your build and was very impressed frank_ster. Before I get all uppity and excited about this project I'm really anticipating the release of the new legacy at the tokyo motor show next month. Would be silly to do all that work if the new legacy is going to be a legitimate player.

Do we have a chart telling which engine that matches with which gearbox?

Even going back to really old stuff like the EA81 and 4MT. (OK, I wouldn't mate an EA81 with a high torque CVT anyway - it would be a waste of energy! :p)

The FA motors still have the same bolt pattern to the transmissions as far as I know.

The part that will be an issue is the wiring harness and ecu unless you go fully aftermarket/stand alone ECU.

I like the FA20 motor, and we are definitely making good power turbocharging the BRZ/FR-S, but I don't think it would go into the 4th gen Legacy all that easy. Still doesn't make the easy torque of the 2.5-liter, either - no replacement for displacement in that regard.

A motor with no low end torque and lag is sucks ville in a automatic !

Yes hence the 3.8 turbo in mine !

Fa 2.0 heads on a ej255?

Now that would be wild, direct injection EJ255 Lol GL getting those two parts to mate up.

That would be like putting the heads off a new 5.0 coyote motor on an old 5.0 mustang block.
