2000 Legacy GT Revival

Recommended Posts

I recently picked this up for $500 with the impression it needed a new engine. Car overheated and seized I was told. Subie has 160k on the clock, it's the limited package, 5 speed manual and in pretty decent shape. There are a few head-scratchers however. Take a look.

Here are some head-scratchers. Notice anything missing?

Once home however she fired right up. Subie has been parked for two months and only took roughly 3 seconds of crank to fire. Smoke billowed out of the 'muffler' but she purred great. No odd sounds, clanks, slaps, knocks etc. Also the oil is pristine, I mean flawless. Zero residues, bad smells, contamination, off color/texture. The antifreeze however has an Irish milkshake texture to it.

Removed door panel due to window off the track and the actuator wasn't even plugged in. Had to remove completely and clean/regrease and it functions great now.

Also Radiator removed as well as thermostat.

The radiator has a small crack it's leaking from so I am going to bandaid it to hold water temporarily so I can see if the cooling system circulates or not. Fingers crossed at this point.

Side note: There were 2 codes stored as 1) Typical PO420 2) misfire in cylinder 3. Did a compression test and 1 & 3 came out at 153. Pulled the plugs as well and they don't look horrid.

Flushed my system 5 times and cleaned out a bit of nastiness. Bad news however is the water has a strong exhaust odor. My family has had success using the HG and block repair before so we gave that a go. Will know more about that in a few days.

Also quickly gave her a bath. Clean(er) pic added.

Today I flushed the system, buttoned back up, and drove around. Coolant level remained stable after topping off and burping. At this point I am going to do a tune up and replace all fluids but we believe the GT may be saved.

Also had this set of Forester wheels in the barn and should be swapping them on. Currently it has nasty white MB wheels and Blizzak studless snow tires...

With the tstat installed the car has crazy temp spikes that wouldn't subside. Felt like it wouldn't relieve being air locked.

Currently I'm driving this as a daily without the tstat. Been a week with road testing and only added about 4 cups of water. Added a pic.

Pushed about 300 miles until it failed. I used it with pretty severe overheating problems to begin with which wasn't ideal conditions. Prior to use, air bubbles in the radiator cap looked like boiling water and after the liquid fix it had a random bubble now and then.

I would only hope with symptoms just starting to show, this could work well. Using this was a last resort and see what would happen.
