2005 5MT noises @ 65k - Ideas?

I know this would work better with a sound clip, but I don't have one at the moment so hopefully descriptions will suffice for now.

History: I bought this 05 LGT used from gfxdave99 recently & have noticed this from the moment I picked it up, so there's no "event" I know of to give me a reference point. He apparently had an ACT clutch installed around 50k & that's pretty much all I know.

Sound 1: When engine braking - there is a light "rattling" sound from the transmission. At first I thought it was from the exhaust noise rattling a heat-shield, but it is very repeatable in every gear & any amount of engine braking - it sorta rattles. Pressing in the clutch or adding any amount of throttle and it stops immediately.

Sound 2: In every gear there is a bit of tranny whine. I honestly assumed this was normal. There was similar if slightly less noisy whine in every gear when I got my 08 Sti new. There is a "normal" amount of gear whine right? It's not like reverse gear whine - it's quieter than that, but it's not silent.

Other than that, everything seems ok. It sure as hell shifts uglier than the 6MT did, but from what I've read, that seems normal too. I'm going to try scotty's cocktail to hopefully make it shift easier, but am somewhat concerned about Sound 2 & especially concerned about Sound 1.

Ideas?

Mk - it appears no one is willing to postulate without a video. I give you ... ... a video. At the very end I hold the phone down by the tranny & you can REALLY hear it, but it's really only about as loud as during the first part. For example, if I have the AC/fan on above about 2-3 I can't hear the rattle by comparison at all.

Seriously - nobody has any idea? In addition - I've been wrenching on the car all day today - spent some time under the car and noticed oil all over the area at the back of the transmission. WTF??

Ideas?

Sound 1) Most likely normal. I have an ACT and this is how it sounded after I had it installed. Have been on it for close to 20K now.

Sound 2) Normal, unless it's high pitched and RPM dependent and gear specific. See this thread I started about my 3rd gear, most likely a bearing. It's starting to go. Video is inside of it too:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/sonofa-5mt-whining-should-start-saving-177145.html

And not to plug my Youtube channel or anything but here are various videos of my car taken from inside the passenger compartment during various points of its life and various driving conditions:

http://www.youtube.com/user/invar1

It sounds to me like what you're describing is perfectly normal. The whine *I'm* currently experiencing in that third gear video is NOT normal. Be forewarned, what I thought was "ugly" shifting going from 2-3 turns out it was NOT normal and may have contributed to my current tranny issues. Most likely the synchro was bad when I got the car... got worse as I drove more on it, got worse still with the increased power, and now I have long term damage to a bearing.

iNVAR I have the exact gear whine. What bearing was it. Little louder on colder days I guess. Heard it pretty normal though. Car has 100k. New fluid in all. Got a clatter after clutch install. Think its the flywheel. Happened twice. I floored the motor and it stopped. We'll see.

I don't know what bearing it is. I haven't had them fix it yet. :) And don't confuse the normal whine with the very high pitched whine in my video. There's the normal drivetrain noise you hear, but it's the high pitched whine you hear that I'm talking about... only when I apply throttle.

could it be the throw out bearing??

Yea - I sorta suspect the TOB. It sounds almost as if the bearing is getting loaded when I'm on the throttle, but when I release the throttle it gets unloaded and the little bit of play allows it to sorta free-spin/rattle the roller cage in the races.

I don't know if the flywheel or TOB were replaced when gfxdave99 had the clutch done - I guess I should PM him and ask.

Well - that's good to hear I'm not alone. As a mechanical engineer it doesn't seem right to me that a clutch should ever make noises like this "normally", but everything else seems ok - just trying to be proactive on a car that's still new-to-me. Would be nice to hear from at least one other ACT owner if it really is just the norm.

If you do a search, you'll find plenty of posts from people with ACT HD clutches that experience this. Some people get it, some don't.

For the record, I also have hardened Kartboy shifter bushings (the rounds ones only), a Kartboy short throw shifter, and a stock Momo silver shift knob. All of those things contribute to noise being transmitted into the passenger cabin.

In fact, believe it or not, I removed the shift knob and put on the old leather Momo knob and it was noticeably quieter.

The consensus seems to be that the noise isn't clutch rattle, but more of gear/driveline lash.

The only reason I'm more inclined to think it's bearing rattle is it is:

A] Harmonic. It seems more apparent at specific rpm/frequencies and less at others.

B] Inconsistent - sometimes I get a round of loud aggressive rattling during engine braking - sometimes I get nada.

If it's your TOB. This is one way to check it out. I work for me. Drive up next to a building. The building will help bounce the sound towards you. Like a drive threw at Wendy's. Push your clutch in & blip the throttle. If you hear a sound like metal paper clip rattling in a tin can. That would be a bad TOB. When I drop my 6MT, my TOB was bad. It spun ruffly & made noise, when done by hand.

i just bought my 05 LGT limited, and it makes a whine that is speed based in all gears, on or off gas, clutch in or out. identical to a reverse gear noise, but not as loud, comparing it to my honda, sounds like PPG helical cut gears (less angle and more beefy than OEM, not as noisy as straight cut). some people have told me it's normal, others have told me its the front diff. both rear wheel bearings have been replaced, but the noise appears to be coming from the front. front wheel bearings are tight (doesnt mean much though) and the pass/ front CV shaft has a ripped boot, with little grease.

i'm bringing it to my buddys shop tomorrow and getting it on a lift and going to get it up to ~50mph and see if i can diagnose where noise is coming from. i'm hoping its the CV shaft. if not ill try to get a video. is gear whine typical? my dad's 2011 legacy GT doesnt make any noises. both MTs.

update: my noise is coming from the tail end of the transmission. not familiar with subarus to much, but im assming thats the center diff. so im going with bad bearings somewhere, anyway to tell if its on the transmssion shafts or the diff shafts? if theyre seperate shafts? lol

I have a 04 sti with 45k on it and it has a bit of gear whine at certain speeds. I bought the car with 27k on it and its always had quite a bit of whine while decelerating. I have always known this to be normal. As for the tapping with the ACT clutch. I have heard people having this issue with that clutch kit also and found it to be normal.

You need to sit in the back seat while someone drives the the car. Any noise from a wheel bearing in the rear will travel up the driveshaft and make you think it's the tranny.

Before my read diff went, I swar it was the tranny. Pulled the tranny and had it checked, nothing was wrong. Pulled the rear diff...it was toast.

Just replaced the left rear wheel bearing. For the first few months of that noise I thought it may have been the tranny or the rear diff I got used. But as it got worse the bearing would sing as I took curves on the highway, I could hear it over my left shoulder. It started making noise last September. About 9000 miles ago.

With the new wheel bearing all the driveline noise is gone.

Sounds like it conuld be the center differential transfer gear bearings. Great news is that you can DIY with a bearing puller and shop press with $125ish in bearings.

I'm ordering up new bearings this week and going to hopefully have this done next weekend.

I believe those P/N apply to the LGT - can't check opposed-forces at work

I DIY, there are walk-thoughs on here here to do that.
