2008 PZEV 2.5i Cat replacements (2 cars) at 80k miles

Recommended Posts

So my brother and I have the same car (different colors) and yes we are twins. It is kinda nice having the same car as you can really get a close look at issues which are common in both cars. At 80,100 miles my brothers car threw a P0420 and (according to the dealership) needed a new cat. In NJ the cats are only warrentied up to 80k miles. They replaced the cat under warrenty even though he was over by 100 miles. A few thousand miles after having the reflash done (forget the recall #).

Now my car. A few thousand miles after I had the reflash done and I'm driving home and my check engine light pops on. I'm at 87,700. I couldn't believe it, P0420. I bring it to the dealership and they test the o2 sensors and same thing. I now need a new cat. After pleading they agreed to cover it under warrenty.

I am greatful that they covered it under warrenty but that sounds a little crazy that these cats are failing after/around 80k. Anyone else experience the same issue? Seems like the P0420 code is posted all over this forum.

That's great to hear the dealer got it covered for you! A genuine Subaru cat assembly is HUGE bucks.

I'm lucky to be in one of the "PZEV" States, so I'm covered for 15yrs/150Kmi.

I'd be curious to know if it was really the catalyst getting weak, or if the situation could have been corrected with new O2 sensor(s). I've seen where you can replace the downstream O2 sensor, it sees the proper O2 content drop and the light goes out.

As long as the downstream O2 sensor sees less O2 in the exhaust stream than the O2 sensor before the CC, you'll have no issues with P0420.

Ya I am always very happy with this dealer. Seems to actually care about me as a customer! Shocking I know. I wondered the same thing, however they did (claim to) check the sensors (I believe with their diagnostic tool) and they determined it was the cat. Could have been the sensors though.

Apparently NJ (I read this on another forum) starting in 09 has a longer warrenty on cats. Not sure if that's accurate or not.

I have 99.6k on my '09 pzev legacy and I'm still running the stock cat. I'm a little worried about how much longer it'll be good for. I've heard CT is one of the pzev states with a 150k warranty, and I pray that this is true because I hear the cats are big bucks like poman said. Hopefully if it goes on me, it goes before 150k.

Take out the downstream O2 sensor and spray some silicone spray on it.. That'll throw a P0430 code right away for you! Kidding.. although that will work. Silicone kills CC's and O2 sensors on contact.

Other than that, living in CT covers you for 15yrs/150Kmi.

FWIW, the used 2002 Forester with ~150Kmi on it my brother recently picked up came fully equipped with a P0430 code, EVAP system codes and a rotted out rear subframe!

Thanks. Although when going through a search, they do come up in different threads. Some would recommend, few have some comments lol. I will say though, if you are ever pointed in the direction of Lynnes Subaru, to stay far away from them.

While it may have been the cat, i doubt it was. As previously posted, usually it is 1 of the o2 sensors. If you ever are looking for a dealer alternative, like for maintenance and your upcoming Timing belts, keep us in mind, we are in cnj!

I'm almost at 100k on my pzev'shiza leggy. The emission code went today and I'm hoping that the whole system is rotted out. I'm in a lev state and bought from an lev state :). Do they get reimbursed for replacing the whole system? If I bring it in will they just look at it as a cash cow with a warranty stamp or try to hustle around it. Suggestions on bringing it in?

What "emissions code" is being displayed?

The 420 one I believe. I'm at the dealership now. Not getting a good feeling about it

420 should be a cat. They should replace it without too much issue if the emissions warranty covers you at the milage/time on your car.
