Radars

Recommended Posts

Looks like my gf wants to get me a detector for my bday so trying to keep the budget under 200$. I know I've seen write-ups for installs but just needing some recommendations.

So far for the value the Whistler CR90 has pretty great reviews. A majority of my drving is interstate so figuring this one hits all necessary areas. Any feedback would be appreciated :)

I just need a warning. I'm not a 10+mph driver just need to know when to take off the cruise, car draws enough attention even doing 3over

I actually had the 9500ix and got a speeding at 75/65, was clocked and the RD caught it too late. Returned it that day and ponied up the difference for the Redline. If you want it to be functional, you need either Redline or the newer Escort Max 360, both have dual front antennas with rear detection. It's the price of one speeding ticket in Cali, so it's worth it for me even though it is on the expensive side. Something to think about for sure, I did a lot of research on those RD/laser jammer forums before deciding on the Redline.

Surprised I never heard of Waze and yet I sell phones ROFL. Smh looks like a great app instead of just basic GoogleMaps.

That is mainly what Im needing though is "what's up ahead" if someone hits me from the back I don't see the likelyhood of that unless in town, where I don't speed so im not overly concerned. Just some peace of mind for the long trips wouldn't hurt.

Waze is a great app. When I first used it, I wasn't a fan. But after a while, I made the switch from google maps. When it was reported there was roadkill ahead, and I saw the bird, R.I.P. , I became a believer.

I had friends tell me about Waze years ago when they first started, and I tried it and wasn't used to it and just went back to the Legacy's Nav or google map. But about 2 years ago, I read some things about it and started using it again. Now I don't drive anywhere without it. Sometimes during traffic, it will tell you how long you will be stuck in traffic, and if there's a faster route, it will adjust for you and I almost always save time taking the new route. The police report and road obstacles features helps a lot too. It also has built in yelp feature, so you can just search for restaurants and slide to yelp to confirm the location. Just download it and play with it a bit. It's main advantage is the amount of users constantly reporting traffic updates. Our local news here even use data from Waze to report traffic and road conditions.

Radar detectors are a waste of money. By the time they go off, you are already caught. They are useless in a state like PA where the majority of police can't (by law, except State Police) use radar. They don't work with ENRADD, VSPEC, or Accutrak. Not sure if they pick up LIDAR.

The Waze app is a data and battery hog. The cop notifier is hardly ever right, unless they are investigating a crash or something.

The best way to avoid being ticketed for speeding is to slow down. In PA, local cops can't (by law) stop you for speeding (3362) unless you are doing at least 10 over.

You're welcome.

Ever been west of the Mississippi river??? Out here you don't see anything at times for hours. Big city I get not having one or seeing the value in one where you're rarely over 45mph. Not looking for a life saver just a simple notice would be nice

Escort 9500ix. Obviously no radar detector is perfect, there have been times that I drive right in front of the cop and it won't go off. But who knows if they targeted me or if my RD just couldn't see their specific radar/laser. But when it goes off, best believe a cop's usually nearby. With laser, usually when it goes off, it's already too late. But again, it has saved with me with laser twice. The second it went off I braked and there they were. That split second was the difference between a ticket and not.

Personally, I would start with the free app and work my way up as needed. My attention to cars around me has saved me more times than I can remember.

Once on the interstate I was about to use the right lane to go around some slow pokes in the passing lanes but hesitated because of the look of the car I was going to need to move in front of...I stayed put, the car starts inching by and its an unmarked HP. I don't lead a pack of speeders and when I cruise it is always within a reasonable speed of the limit, not a single traffic stop in 12+ years. I learned quickly when I was young.

IMo I like laser jammers I had one b4 n saved me a lot of money it's would ring really loud when cop is trying to clock u , thing only thing you must do is slow down then turn it off so he can clock you when you slow down otherwise he'll know u have a jammer otherwise he will think his gun just had a hard time clocking you, just my 2cents

I can't tell you how many times my escort redline has saved me, sometimes I would slow down when it goes off, and the person behind me would get annoyed and speed pass me and gets pulled over. I'm sure if you ask most people would a reliable RD, they would share similar story. I've had 6 speeding tickets in SoCal prior to owning this RD. RD + experience (knowing what to look for, possible traps...etc) and now adding Waze has kept me ticket free for about 4-5 years. *knock on wood*

I've had a V1 for years, used it a lot going up and down the northeast corridor when I lived out that way (worked like a champ). When I was in TX, I stopped (Austin) except for longer trips - same deal here in NM - there really aren't many speed traps around. I like that you can upgrade it when new features come out, but haven't for quite some time.

I use my Excort Passport 8500 X50 with mirror mount and find it a useful tool, along with not driving like a TOOL, in avoiding meeting the various enforcement patrols who just love that out of state vehicle.

I also use an 8500x50, it's already paid for itself numerous times. Plus it lights up blue. Because I do so much city driving, I do wish I had shelled out for the 9500ix to get the GPS lockout feature, but it's been great on highway trips, generally picking up state troopers from 1-2 miles out.

A bad radar detector (read: generally made by Cobra) is worse than not having one. A decent one will pay for itself quickly.

Side note:

I've noticed I tend to drive slightly slower with the radar detector than without it. It generally serves as an additional "all clear" to go WOT on an on ramp or when passing someone before going back to a 75mph cruise.

+1 on the V1, but it'll be tough to find them in your price range. I don't know how folks with detectors without the directional arrows make it through their day -- their struggle is real

But seriously, knowing the direction of the "threat" is pretty darn useful. The V1 rarely gets false positives (like, a handful of times in the ten years I've owned it), but they can sometimes be filtered out with knowing the location of the threat -- i.e., the arrows.

For example, a couple of months ago the V1 started going off on the highway -- pointing forward. I slowed down but still slowly passed a beater pickup, and the radar direction suddenly switched to the rear. I let the pickup pass me, and the direction switched to the front. So I realized the pickup was causing it to go wonky, even though there was zero chance that it was a cop car.

I have no idea what that pickup had inside, but it was causing the V1 to trip out. If I didn't have the arrows, that pickup would've followed me halfway home, and the radar detector would've kept showing a full radar "threat" the entire time.
