5W-30 or 10W-30?

Purchased a 1995 Subaru Legacy L few weeks ago, and doing the first oil change here in a few days, because its due for a oil change.

 

Mileage on my Legacy is 185,464.

Oil change due at 185,600.

 

Guy who had the car before used 5w-30.

 

I've been looking around on the internet, and some websites say to use 10W-30.

 

Which oil should I use?

I have always used 5w-30 and have had no problems.

I have run 15w-40 for several years now due to perceived bottom end noise. Now I'm running 1qt Synthetic Lucas Stabilizer and 3 qt 10-30 Rotella T5.

 

You want to protect the engine to some measure, you don't want it to start burning oil/making bottom end noise like mine. If mine WASN'T a flaming heap of hot oil guzzling garbage, I'd run 5-40 Rotella T6 like alot of the WRX guys.

i run 10w-40 in the summer here in az. when i get the ej25 rebuild finished it will likely run 5w-30 synthetic for the remainder of its life.

I need to do oil change at 185,795.

 

I purchased some Penzoil 5w-30 at Walmart few days ago.

my last oil change 2qts of 5w20 castrol synblend 1+someqt of 10w40 castrol high mileage and 1 of 5w30 castrol edge. whatever I had laying around the garage. If its clean the car is happy. I assume.

 

my question is does 1qt of 5w20+1qt of 10w40= 2qts of 7.5w30???

Correct, I'd switch by seasons....it'll be more important if car isn't garage kept.

I use 5w-30 and have stuck with Pennzoil which has worked great for me. I dont know if I was just hearing things but I used another brand once and the engine sounded more clanky.

there is a great chart in the owners manual for which weights when.

 

but lets leave oil brand out of it.

new oil, any new oil, is better than old dirty oil.
