Oil pressure gauge install, empty oil galley

Well I finally got around to installing my oil pressure gauge sender. I have had the gauge wired up with my boost gauge for a while but I was waiting on a few parts for the sender. Anyway, here is what I did to install the sender.

 

First- take off the engine cover by removing the four pop-its.

Now you can see the empty oil galley, between the intercooler and the intake, it just has an allen plug in it.

Remove the intercooler to get more access to the area, Take off the two bolts on the turbo. These are both 12mm.

Then there is one 12mm bolt on the support bracket and two 10mm bolts for the recirc valve. Then loosen the hose clamp that attaches the intake (no picture of that) and you can remove the intercooler.

Here is a side shot with the intercooler removed, I wadded up a thick paper towel and blocked the turbo just in case.

Now you can remove that allen plug. I used an L 5/16" allen wrench, putting the long end of the L into the plug as there isn't room the other way. I then used a 10mm deep socket with an extension to get some leverage on the wrench. The plug is really in there good, they must have used some kind of loctite at the factory. I wish I would have had a set of allen sockets as they would have made the job much easier. I'm sure the true size of the plug is metric but the 5/16 did work for me. Here is the oil galley with the plug removed.

I bought the subaru part below, $8.xx, to put in the allen plugs place. You will also need to get the washer/gasket that goes with it, part #037018200. This part is threaded 1/8 bspt so if you have an npt threaded sender, like I do, you will need to get a bspt to npt adapter. There are some places though that you can get this part threaded npt, www.wrxtra.com I believe is one.

Now, if your sender is small enough and threaded 1/8 bspt (like the defi ones I think) you could just screw it in and be set. A crows foot wrech would pretty much be a must in order to tighten it though. The sender that I have however, is tool large to fit here, so I had to remote mount it. Neil from VEI was very helpful in getting me the parts necessary to do this.

 

Here is the SS hose connected to the plug via a bspt to npt adapter.

And here is a shot of the sender installed. I just mounted it using an existing bolt for a hose support bracket. The hose looks close to the heat shield in the picture but I moved it a little before I was done.

You can see that I already connected the one wire to the sender required for the gauge. This is just a shot of the grommet I used to get my vacuum line and oil pressure wire through the firewall. These come in behind the HVAC blower, removing the glovebox is the easiest way to get at them.

Now you just reinstall the intercooler. I do suggest putting a little vaseline or something slippery on the opening that connects the intercooler to the intake, otherwise it is a b*$%h to get them to slide together all the way. Also be careful when bolting the intercooler to the turbo as the bolts go in kind of at an angle and seem to cross thread easily.

Thanks for the write up! I have a few questions:

 

1. Did you use teflon tape on the oil galley adapter?

2. Is that a brass fitting?

3. What did you torque it down to?

 

I just ordered my adapter and can't wait to get them installed.

1. I used teflon tape on all the threads for each connection. The subaru part actually came with a thread lock sealant already applied, however I installed it first and found out the sender was too big to fit so I had to take it out and put back the allen plug for a while. If I had all the SS hose at first I would not have needed teflon tape on that part.

 

2. Subaru part is not brass, all of the others are though.

 

3. I don't have a torque wrench so... I just went by feel, being careful not to overtighten the brass parts. It has been a couple days of driving now and I don't see any leaks.

Is it necessary to drain oil from the engine before proceeding with the galley installation?

Question - what pressures are you seeing at both cruise and idle?

I got my AutoMeter NEXUS oil-pressure gauge hooked-up this weekend thanks to your excellent walk-through - and here's what little I can contribute to this thread :) --->

 

(1) The oil pressure sender relocation/extension/adaptor kit (for 1/8 NPT senders, like all AutoMeter units) from WRXtra: http://www.wrxtra.com/cat_3.html actually contains its own block galley plug/adaptor. However, to utilize it, you'll need to have a 15/16th socket, as it's one huge mother!

 

(2) While the part provided with the WRXtra kit threads easily to the relocation/extension hose, I found it much harder to get to thread to our block than the Subaru OEM galley plug/adaptor; however, at the same time, it was also harder to thread the relocation/extension hose to the Subaru OEM component than with the one supplied by WRXtra - choose your poison. If you decide to "cross-mate" the Subaru OEM galley plug with the WRXtra extension hose, be sure to use some thread-sealant, as the female thread "inside" the Subaru OEM galley plug is not coated with thread sealant, nor is the male thread on the hose (WRXtra coats the "inside" female threads of its block galley adaptor).

 

(3) Don't be like me, thinking that a crow's foot wrench isn't a necessity. Trust me, it definitely is. Go and get yourself at least the proper 7/16th crow's foot before you start this project. I actually had to stop for the night due to my disregard of this tool advice, only to need to start-up the next day, after having hopped down to Sears in my wifey's WRX.

Question - what pressures are you seeing at both cruise and idle?

 

 

At idle when first started it is in the upper 90's. When warmed up idle psi is in the 30's if I remember right.

 

Cruising when warmed up is in the low 80 psi range.

 

Its nice to know when the oil is up to operating temp based on the pressure going down, then I know I can drive a little harder.

DK - Yes, it's steep, but heck, for me, I was more concerned about the fact that it was a "one-stop shop" with headache-free reputation. :) Having Anna has totally changed my priorities, LOL! :lol:

 

AutoMeter carries their own BSTP-to-NPT adaptor, if I remember correctly. And yes, most of the bigger automotive parts retail chains will have such an adaptor handy. Similarly, they'll also have the hose and hose fittings that you'd need to extend/remote-locate the sender assembly.

Just some advice for anyone else trying this for the first time...

That plug is really far down in there. It doesn't look like it so much in these pictures but trust me it is. It seems that a magnetic pick up tool would be a good thing to have as well since there's not a lot of room in there for a human hand.

 

One last thing, see that black hose that comes down and goes into this black L shaped thing....that might not be in the same position on your own car. I'm in the middle of this install right now found that line to be directly in the way of the galley. I can rotate it counterclockwise but it's a slight pain.

 

That plug takes an 8mm allen socket as well.
