Anyone Off Roaded Their LGT?

Recommended Posts

I know the LGT is a road car but I was curious as to whether any members had taken their's off the road. The only direct experiences I have had with my Spec.'s AWD are wet roads were it is really sweet and the sand covered parking lot I described in the circumnavigation thread that would have sunk my (and did sink it at that very location) venerable RWD J30t.

umm probably, I haven't but one guy drove his wagon through a overflowed creek. It went over his hood and he didn't hydrolock. It was a long time ago though. I think it was titled water in my hoodscoop. I think. But umm yeah don't try it he was lucky.

On purpose? I'm sure some of these Colin McRae wannabes have done so accidentally.

On purpose, by accident, a short cut that turned out to be a little rougher than you thought, crossing a median (on a non access controlled hwy of course), etc.

There are roads out west that recommend 4 wheel drive only and are deemed "non technical". The LGT obviously doesn't have clearance necessary for any serious off road stuff but S. Utah has some beautiful areas only accessible via these tracks.

I'm picking up my 3rd Legacy tonight. It is a 2007 LGT 5EAT. My first was a 2001 LGT, second was a 2004 Legacy SE which was almost identical to the 2001. I lived in So. Cal when I had the 2001 and drove it on 4WD roads in Joshua Tree Nat Park. They are basically sandy jeep roads and not really technical. We also have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and an old Chevy 4x4 pickup. The except for ground clearance, the Subaru will run on anything any sane person would drive the Jeep. I did witness an old (about '95) Legacy drive up Ophir Pass in SW Colorado as we drove down. The girl and her dog had no problems driving up a very steep, very rocky grade. If you're careful and know what you're doing you can drive these on more stuff than you realize. After I traded the 01 in, I do have a "no offroad" policy on my driving the Legacy. No sense in beating up the Sube when we have the Jeep.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend river crossings. I got lucky. The thread is here:

The car does do well in all-terrain situations though. An Outback would be better because it has more ground clearance. For serious off-roading, even the Outback has too long of a wheel base and you get bad approach angles. Nevertheless, I've taken my Legacy thorugh a fair bit of mud and 6" of unplowed snow with no problems. Subaru's AWD system is one of the best ever made.

Excellent link. Glad I asked about the off roading because by the title I wouldn't want to subject myself to the horrors of another melting intercooler thread. I like the tarp idea but I would never get into something as severe as crossing a raging river. (knock wood)

6" of unplowed is kiddy play for these cars. Last thanksgiving, we got a whole buncha snow here in N Central Indiana. I had about a 20 minute drive home that took me 3 hours cuz I was havin so much fun tearin up the unplowed 10" city streets. I tell ya, there's not much better than bouncin off the rev limiter in first gear goin 40 degrees down a street and havin complete control.

I went to a church in the area that is notorious for ppl doin donuts in, I took my car back there to see if I could get it to do AWD tornadoes (by the way... so much fun). After a little fenagling, I got 'er to spin like a top. On my way out of the church, which is on a corner bordered by 2 busier secondary roads that had already been plowed, I rammed 'er into a plow mound that buried my headlights and a little of the hood. I got stuck and was about to get pissed when I remembered my offroading days from when I had my 92 Sierra, just calm down, back up if you can, and try again. Worked perfectly! Went through the mound like that Ford Escape commercial. Spectacular car!

BTW, this was my first heavy snow with the LGT.

All the time. I am a climber and have to take down some rough roads often. It does just as good if not better than friends small SUV's and every asked how I got it there. Never had a problem or bottomed out. GRP 05 manual LGT wagon.

What tires you running? I was thinking about going a little taller with my next set of tires...after I wear out the stock ones.
