rotorblade
I'm about to replace my timing belt but before I dove in I wanted to clear somethings up. I read in one resource that upon removing the old belt the cams would try to spin due to valve spring pressure, most likely resulting in bent or chipped valves. In this report they said you needed special tools designed to lock each cam pulley in place to keep them from turning. In every other report I've heard nothing about pulleys turing on their own, so anyone have advice?
phi11
the factory service manual shows a picture of the tool, but I can't find the tool part number.
rotorblade
I have the part number, but what I'm concerned about is whether or not I need it. I'm just unsure on whether or not the cams will be forced to turn once the old belt is removed.
k2zeppelin
Did mine about 3 months ago, this was my first timing belt too. Mine did spin, not sure if I got lucky, but it didn't bend or chip anything.
DannyP
I changed mine in the beginning of the year. You don't really need the cam tools. The passenger side stayed, but the driver's side cams(both) kept moving. It would have been much easier to have a friend help, one guy holds the cams, and the other guy puts the belt on. It can be done by yourself, but it's not easy. I do highly recommend the OE Suby belt, the alignment marks are very clear. I strongly recommend changing the oil pump o-ring and front crank seal while you are in there. Also, cam seals if you have over 100K.
