Difficult to paint vinyl splash guards??

Recommended Posts

I want to get some USDM OEM splash guards (made of vinyl?) but I'm planning on painting it myself with some custom color-matching spray paint set. Is it difficult to prep and paint vinyl? Is there any special materials/agents that I need? Thanks! :)

the USDM splash guards are here: https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/product_info.php?cPath=31_42&products_id=974

and customized matching spray paint here: http://www.paintworldinc.com/default.aspx

*I've tried their stuff on my previous white car and the color matches pretty good, so I'm gonna give it another try with my current car (hoping my car's color hasn't faded much :D)

Sorry, they aren't listed on the site, but Japan Parts will get you any item you want if you have the part number. You just have to send them an e-mail and ask for a quote + shipping to your address (Include the part number and a breif description of the part). They were around 22,500-JPYshipped which currently converts to around $215.00 US (Price fluctuates depending on the Yen vs. the Dollar).

Here are the part numbers that fit the 2.5GT & 2.5i:

Painted Standard Mud Guards Sedan (Front & Rear Set) - J1017AG230##

Painted Standard Mud Guards Wagon (Front & Rear Set) - J1017AG220##

...and make sure to replace the ## with the color code for your car:

## - Designates necessary color code for painted parts.

Atlantic Blue Pearl = BE

Regal Blue Pearl = BH

Champagne Gold = GA

Obsidian Black Pearl = VW

Garnet Red Pearl = RO

Brillant Silver Metallic = TE

Satin White Pearl = WZ

I've collected a bunch of part numbers here, JDM, EDM & USDM: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7871

Legacy05GT - I'll try and get a pic of the whole car with the mud guards this week.

I'd recommend you get your paint and primer from paintscratch.com and order it with the flex additive for bumper covers and vinyl pieces.

Additionally, I'd prep the surface first with an alcohol rub down, followed by a light sanding with steel wool.

Before putting the primer on, I'd lay down some mist coats of Bulldog Adhesion Promotor (avail. at all auto chain stores).

Doing all this is a PITA but it will ensure the paint doesn't flake off in a year or two.
