Power Steering Pump Rebuilt kit

Recommended Posts

Does someone know where to find a rebuild kit for the 2005 LGT?

The lowest price I've found for a remanufactured pump is ~$150 without the core charge. I have some time right now and would rather change out the seals than pay $150+.

I tried doing a search but only found a rebuild thread for an older generation legacy.(but I wouldn't be surprised if the same kit worked for ours)

I put some die in the fluid and man that this was glowing from everywhere..

Be sure to put it together properly, there is 1000psi of oil just waiting to explode if you don't.

I know of two Subaru techs that have TRIED to rebuild these with no success. OP - I would look at a quality rebuilt rack if possible.

We've found that a lot of the reman/rebuilt pumps just don't work as well as an OEM one. For us it ends up being more of a PITA than anything so we shy away from them. Problem is the OEM is super expensive. :(

I'm looking for a rebuild kit for 2005 LGT ps pump. Would prefer OEM kit. Anyone got a part number?

Im looking to trouble shoot my steering problem as well. How can I define the location,as far as it being the pump or the rack? The pump doesn't make noise, and I'm not sure if it's pushing the appropriate psi

Just to make sure, have you guys done a full fluid replacement, and checked belt tightness? Replaced o-ring?

Will a hose slightly leaking cause tough steering?

I would think that any place air can get into the system will give you a problem. Replace the hose, if you have old fluid, flush it out, and then see how your steering goes.

OK, I thought I had a leaky line for the PS but I don't. The rack and pinion looks pretty good, minus the old oil and junk that was on it. I washed it off pretty good with cleaner and looked for the steering culprit. If I go slow with the wheel it's fine, but when I try to turn fast, it's best not there. Any one go thru this? Looking for the best and cheaper way to fix it.

There was a thread or two on rebuilding our pumps over at our cousin site NAIOC. Synopsis: There are kits for the older pumps, but not for 2005. You have to source all the o-rings, seals and bearings by the piece.

Try THIS ONE for example.

It is kind of unclear (to me) if this was a successful project, long term. Also, before you do this, make sure the pump is not just leaking at the 90 degree low pressure inlet elbow. If it is, a new OEM o-ring from the dealer will fix it. There doesn't seem to be a workaround with a generic o-ring. See THIS THREAD to fix that problem.

Heh, last inspection they said mine had a small leak too, might need to replace it soon.

05GT too.

Try replacing this o-ring before replacing the pump. Good pictures from post #61 on.

I think anyone having PS issues should replace this o-ring before replacing the pump.

I also had to replace my PS cap last year, because it was leaking a little. So if liquid can get out, that makes me think air could have been getting in that way, too.

Yeah, it's a common issue with these cars. The original o-ring shrinks, and can cause problems. I think they changed the material from nitrile rubber, to silicone, so the new o-rings should last longer. I wish I had taken a picture when I changed mine, the size difference was easy to see. The dealer should have the o-ring in stock, it's only $1-$3, depending on the dealer. I bought 2 last time, just in case one got damaged while installing, which isn't too hard to do in my opinion.

Barmanbean and latentwagon have really good pictures here, and a comparison of an old o-ring vs a new one.
